ハワイ大学では、現在歌舞伎の応援をしています
イーストウェストセンターでの展示「Kabuki in Hasai’i Connections through Time and Space」(5/5まで)が行われ、今日は「Discover Kabuki」として、弁天役による日本語と英語の名乗り、日本駄右衛門の衣装の着付け実演、瀧昇君、卯瀧君による立回り、高麗蔵さんと私による歌舞伎舞踊「正札附根元草摺引」が披露されました
会場は満席で、かつてハワイ大学の歌舞伎の舞台に立った方たちも多く見受けられました
心に残ったのは「ハワイに来て歌舞伎を見せてくれて本当に感謝しています。どれほどの犠牲を払ってきてくれたのか、よくわかります。皆さんにとって一瞬ですが、私たちにとっては一生心に残る素晴らしいことなんです」と何度も何度も妻に繰り返して話してくれたという日系人の方の言葉です。
こちらこそ今まで歌舞伎を守り続けてくれたことに感謝しますと伝えたところ、歌舞伎の体験は自分を変えてくれたのだととてもうれしそうにしていらしたそうです
このプロジェクト、ハワイ大学とともにやってこられて本当に良かったと思える瞬間でした

University of Hawaii has been pushing for Kabuki as a whole.
The exhibition “Kabuki in Hawaii: Connections through Time and Space” will run until May 5th.
And today, we had a kind of showcase called “Discover Kabuki”.
The hall was full and there were a lot of UH graduates who had once taken in Kabuki productions.
What made me impressed was the words from a graduate, “I immensely appreciate your sacrifices to the production. Thank you so much for coming to Hawaii. It may be a moment for you, but for us, it is going to stay in our hearts forever!”
She repeatedly told this to my wife.
As my wife expressed her deepest gratitude for preserving Kabuki for such a long time, she was recalling her days at the university and said that through Kabuki she has changed. She has attained stillness and strength in her.
Her words made our days worth it.
