佐渡ケ嶽部屋の琴ノ若関が大関に昇進しました
佐渡ケ嶽部屋とは先代の親方からの家族ぐるみのお付き合いで、琴ノ若はうちの娘と同じ歳
以前は、三月場所、十一月場所(九州)が僕たちの大阪松竹座、博多座公演と重なることが多く、旅先でお会いしたり、時には東京から妻が娘と博多に来る際に雪駄履きで一人旅の将且君(現 琴ノ若関)をお連れして来たこともありましたっけ
その日は将且君のお誕生日で、福岡空港で現佐渡ケ嶽親方と一緒に到着を待ち、そのままお料理屋さんに直行し、大きな大きなCOSTCOのケーキでお祝いしたのも良い思い出です
大阪場所の際には、妻が将且君と娘を連れて海遊館へ行きました
ヘビに触るコーナーでは、なぜかうちの娘は怖がりながらもヘビに触れたようですが、娘より身体が遥かに大きな将且君は最後まで怖がって触れなかったそう
それはそれは優しい優しい坊ちゃんでした
そして帰り際、お腹が空いただろうとドーナツ屋さんに行ったところ、「部屋のみんなにお土産に買って行きたい」とまだ小学校入学前の将且君が言ったのには、本当にびっくりしました
移動のタクシーでも相撲中継を聴いている運転手さんに「佐渡ｹ嶽部屋のお相撲さんは勝ちましたか？」(すみません、表現はうろ覚えです)と、聞き、助手席にしがみつくようにして相撲中継に聞き入っていました
どこをとっても本当にお相撲が好きで、部屋を継ぐのだと言う心構えが幼いながらにできていた将且君
大関にはなるべくしてなったのだなと言う印象です
とは言えここまで、弛まぬ努力と精進を重ねて来たことは間違いなく、その日々が大関と言う形で結実したのですね
これからはさらにもう一踏ん張り
歴史に残る立派な横綱となってね、将且君！

Kotonowaka of the Sadogatake Stable is promoted to Ozeki.
We’re family friends with the Sadogatake family since his grandfather days and he is the same age as my daughter.
I used to appear in Osaka in March and Hakata in November which means the same as sumo schedule.
So we used to see each family there.
One time, my wife took our daughter and Masakatsu kun (Kotonowaka) wearing setta, Japanese traditional sandals, together and flew to Hakata where his father (Kotonowaka at that time) and I were waiting for their arrival at the Fukuoka airport.
It was his birthday and we went directly to a restaurant to celebrate his birthday with huge Costco cake.
And my wife also took them to Kaiyukan Aquarium in Osaka.
There was a “experience touching a snake” corner and my daughter could touch it, while he was too scared to touch it.
He was a gentle giant.
Every time they took taxis, he asked drivers listening to sumo matches, “Did the Sadogatake stable wrestlers win?”
He kept holding the back of passenger seat and listening to radio.
He has just loved sumo and was ready to devote his life to sumo by the age of 5 or 6 years old already.
He was destined to be Yokozuna.
But of course he couldn’t make it without his endless effort and dedication to sumo.
One more step left to be a Yokozuna!
I’m expecting to see you as a great Yokozuna in history, Masakatsu kun!
