今回の大学でのお稽古もいよいよ終盤
今一度、ハワイ州立大学演劇舞踊科のイエッツイー教授と共に立ち上げて来た企画についてご説明します

詳しく書いてありますが、概要は以下のようになります
サトウキビ畑の労働者として日本人が初めてハワイに移民してから約150年
その彼らと共に実は歌舞伎もハワイに根付いていたこちをご存知の方はほとんどいないと思います
最初の入植から25年後には初めての歌舞伎が上演され、その後オアフ島だけでも幟が立つ芝居小屋がいくつもできました

しかし日系人コミュニティーの中で楽しまれて来た歌舞伎は様々な歴史の中で、ハワイ大学が英語で演じる歌舞伎として受け継ぐこととなりました
英語で上演するようになって来年で100周年
その記念すべき公演は「弁天娘女男白浪」を選びました
ハワイ大学の歴史ある歌舞伎の授業は、一年間かけて歴史から実技までをしっかりと学びます
過去には尾上九郎右衛門のおじさん、中村又五郎のおじさんなど指導にいらしています
最終的には大学内のケネディーシアターで上演するのですが、ここまでは今までと同じ。今回は長い歴史の中で初めて日本に「Kabuki」が里帰りし、2024年6月1日には岐阜県の清流プラザ、2日は相生座にて上演されます
ハワイでの英語による歌舞伎はもはや「地歌舞伎」とも言えるとイエッツイー教授も述べていますが、恐らく日本の皆様が予想している以上に本格的なものです
ケネディーシアターは今年で開場60年
歌舞伎が上演できるよう花道が作られていて、柿落としは「弁天小僧」
この長く貴重な歴史ある教育のお手伝いを瀧乃屋として、これからもできる限りしていきたいと思っています

Details are explained in the website, but let me explain the rough outline of the project Dr. J. Iezzi and I have been working on.
150 years have passed since the first immigrants from Japan colonized to Hawaii as sugarcane farmers, as you know probably.
25 years after the first immigration, the first Kabuki was produced, and there were many theaters for Kabuki in Oahu at least.
Through historical events, “Kabuki” being enjoyed among the Japanese community changed its home base to the University of Hawaii and changed its language into English,100 years have passed since then.
We selected “The Maiden Benten and the Bandits of the White Waves” (Benten Musume Meo no Shirakami) as the anniversary production.
The education of UH Kabuki of its long history starts from learning the history and backgrounds to performance, taking at least a full year.
If we see back to the history, Onoe Kuroemon san, Nakamura Matagoro san, and several other actors came to Hawaii to teach.
Then at the end of the term, students perform Kabuki at the Kennedy Theatre founded 60 years ago, fully equipped (hanamichi) to perform Kabuki.
If we think of the history, it is not surprising that the opening production at the theatre was “Benten Kozo”.
What is different and significant is that we make “Kabuki” going back to its homeland!
After the production at the Kennedy Theatre, the students will come to Japan to show “Kabuki” to us the Japanese, they have cherished for more than 100 years.
On June 1st, they will be at Gifu Seiryu Plaza and 2nd, at the Aioiza.
“English Kabuki” in Hawaii can be already considered as one of the local kabuki, says Dr. Iezzi,
you will be surprised its authenticity if you see it.
