前回の話は、いかがでしたか？
少しは興味を持ちましたか？
今回は、いよいよマザー・グースの一節が、
実際に引用されている例をご紹介していきます。
マザー・グースは童謡ですが、大人の世界でも
地下水脈のように脈々と受け継がれていることを
知ることになるでしょう。
もう一度、原典で確認しておきましょう。

今後は、この本を「マザー・グース辞典」とします。
マザー・グース辞典の中身をご紹介しながら、引用された
例をお伝えしていきます。
マザー・グース辞典には全部で５５０の文例が掲載されて
います。その文例ごとに背景などの解説が施されています。
アルファベット順（alphabetical order）に文例が掲載され
ています。
尚、「数字」はマザー・グース辞典の掲載順を示します。
引用例をご紹介する前に、最初の文例をお見せします。
これはアルファベットの勉強のために親が子供に教えため
に考えだされたものかもしれません。
童謡ですからリズム感がとても重要です。

かなりの長文でしたね？
Who killed Cock Robin? をヒントにミステリー
小説にした、子供向けの作品があります。
Who Really Killed Cock Robin? (Eco Mysteries)
[ペーパーバック]です。
この本は、アマゾンの解説を読むと、
そのコックロビンの死は、サドルボローの町
にとっては軽視できないことだった。
この町の生態系に、何かひどい異変が
起こっている…? アリの異常発生、
カエルの鳴き声が聞こえない静かな夜、
川で検出された危険な未知の化学物質、
異様な刺激臭の煙を出すゴミ処分場、
そしてさえずることのできないコックロビン
のヒナ。中学2年生の少年・トニーは仲間
とともにコックロビンの死の真相を明らかに

小説になった例 ２
Humpty Dumpty（ハンプティ・ダンプティ）も
聞いたことがあると思います。

Couldn't put Humpty Dumpty together again.
ハンプティ・ダンプティという名称を知らなくても、
下図はご覧になったことがあるかもしれません。
ずんぐりむっくりした体型ですね！
英米人にはこのイメージが焼き付いています。
『鏡の国のアリス（原題 Through the Looking Glass）』
（ルイス・キャロル、1872年）の中に、
ハンプティ・ダンプティが描かれています。
'To show you I'm not proud, you may shake hands
with me.'
Tenniel's Humpty Dumpty in Through the Looking-
Glass,1872.
Humpty Dumptyの文章の中に、もう一つ引用されている
部分があります。正確に言うと、一部を変更しています。
ですが、このハンプティ・ダンプティを下敷きにしている
のは明らかです。
その本は、
『大統領の陰謀（原題は All the President's Men）』
です。
著者は、当時、米Washington Postの2人の敏腕記者、
Bob Woodward（ボブ・ウッドワード）と Carl Bernstein
（カール・バーンスタイン）です。
この本の内容は、後に政界を揺るがした「ウォーターゲート事件
（Watergate Scandal）」をスクープしたものです。
時の大統領・リチャード・ニクソンの盗聴事件に端を発する、
全米で騒然となった事件に至るまでの経緯が書かれています。
現職の大統領の秘密をすっぱ抜いたのです。
映画になった例
『大統領の陰謀』は映画にもなりました。Robert Redford
（ロバート・レッドフォード）とDustin Hoffman
（ダスティン・ホフマン）が2人の記者を好演しました。
All the President's Men は、オリジナルの All the King's Men
が分からなければ、「文字どおり」にしか解釈できず、
「あのことか！」とは合点がいかないでしょう。
マザー・グースが、浸透していることがお分かりに
なりましたか？
