There was a teacher at the college I use to go to who liked abstract art. He often said that all formats of art existed only to provide excuses to make marks when looked at from the point of view of the artist. The "marks" that this teacher was talking about were lines and dots created with any type of media, whether it be pencils, brushes, pens, crayons, or chalk. 旺文社国語辞典で調べたら、「抽象美術」とは、「写実による芸術を排して心理主義的に色や形だけの総合関係を抽象的に追求しようとする近代美術の傾向」と定義されます。つまり、色や形を利用して現実の対象を再現しようとするのではなく、色や形自体、そして色や形が持っている精神的な面を表現するのが目標であることが分かります。ただ、この定義だとまだ分からない部分があります。「抽象的に追求しようとする」とは、具体的に何でしょうか。答えを探る前に、別な辞書の定義を見てみましょう。「goo」というホームページのインターネット上の国語辞典では、次のように定義されます。「現実の対象の再現を意図せず、色・形・量感など造形要素それ自体のもつ可能性を追求する芸術。」この定義を読んで、「抽象的に追求しようとする」とは、「目の前に存在する色々なものを再現しようとする時に利用する見方や考え方ではなく、造形要素そのものそして造形要素が持つ精神的な効果に関して考える時に利用する見方や考え方を利用して、色や形の関係を追求する」と解釈して良いと思います。つまり、短く言いますと、「ものの見た目に捕われないで、色は色として、形は形として追求する」ということでしょうか。

In other words, we can see from this definition that the goal is not to attempt to reproduce a physical object that exists in the real world using color and form, but instead to express color and form themselves, as well as the psychological elements that color and form posses. But this definition still leaves some hazy areas. For example, what exactly does "abstractly pursue" mean? Before searching for an answer, let's first take a look at a definition from another dictionary. The internet Japanese dictionary on a website called "goo" gives the following definition. "Art that does not intend to reproduce an object that exists in the real world, but instead pursues the possibilities possessed by formal elements in and of themselves, such as color, shape, and weight." This definition could lead us to interpret "abstractly pursue" as meaning, "not using the way of looking at things and thinking about things that is used when one attempts to reproduce the various things that one sees, but instead, using in order to pursue the relationship of color and form a way of looking at things and thinking about things that is used when one attempts to depict formal elements themselves and express the psychological effects that those formal elements posses." In other words, to put it shortly, maybe we could say that it is, "pursuing color as color and form as form without getting caught up by the appearance of physical things."
では、この「抽象的に追求する」とは、実際絵を描く時、どのようにすればよいでしょうか。それこそ抽象芸術の面白いところでしょうか。絵を描く人によって答えが異なりますから、色々な人の作品を見て、「この人にとって、形や色、そしてその総合関係を抽象的に追求するとは何でしょう」。
So, in terms of "abstractly pursuing," what exactly should you do when actually making a picture? It is the very answer to that which is the fascinating part of abstract art. Each artist has their own unique answer, so we can look at the work of many different people and ask ourselves, "What does abstractly pursuing form, color, and the overall relationship of those elements mean to this artist?"
私の場合、抽象的な作品を作る時、装飾的な面をどうしても優先してしまいます。「赤は暖かい色だからここに置いて、暖かい気分にさせて、そして冷たい青にぶつけさせることで、見る側の気持ちはどうなるか？」のような考え方はあまりしません。どちらかといいますと、「赤をここに置けばかっこういいし、青とぶつけさせたら鮮やかで面白い構図になります」というような考え方をします。
In my case, when I create an abstract piece, I always seem to prize the decorative quality first and foremost. I don't usually catch myself thinking things like, "Well, I'll put red here because it is a warm color, so I'll bring out a warm feeling, and then juxtapose it with a cold blue... and how will that affect the emotions of the viewer?" More often than not, I am thinking things like, "Putting red here really looks cool, and juxtaposing it with blue gives a really dazzling effect and makes a really interesting composition."
