ハリー・ベラフォンテの構想をもとに、イギリスで活躍するミュージシャン、ボブ・ゲルドフが提唱したバンド・エイドの成功に触発されてアフリカの飢餓と貧困層を解消する目的で作られたキャンペーンソングである。作詞・作曲はマイケル・ジャクソンとライオネル・リッチーが共作で行い、プロデュースはクインシー・ジョーンズが担当した。
