SUMMARY
今、多くの大学が「知的好奇心」の授業を実施しています。そうした授業の目的は、学生が幅広い知識を備えたエンジニアや科学者になるのを後押しすることです。知的好奇心は、育んで発達させることのできるスキルであり、世界についてもっと知りたい、という欲求なのです。

Janet Pulaski: How are your students preparing for the summer, Tim? Are they going to work through it to meet their goal of graduating in three years rather than four?
Tim Blanco: Definitely. They're eager to stick to the plan and skip the summer break. I was quite intrigued when one of my students, an engineering major, mentioned taking a class in intellectual curiosity in the summer session. Apparently many universities now offer courses like this. They're designed to encourage students to become well-rounded engineers and scientists. Many people see curiosity as an innate quality, but intellectual curiosity is a skill that can be nurtured and developed.
Lidia Grace: I was asked to write a recommendation letter recently by a former subordinate who's applying to grad school, and one of the questions I was supposed to address was, "Does this applicant have intellectual curiosity"? If I'd said he has none, it could have imperiled his acceptance despite his stellar academic record. Admissions officers today look for signs of intellectual vibrancy through recommendations and essays.
Ide Kyohei: What exactly is intellectual curiosity?
Tim Blanco: It's the desire to learn more about the world and find the answers to deeper questions. Without it, our world wouldn't progress and evolve as it has. It's the driving force behind scientific discoveries, medical breakthroughs and innovative new technologies.
Lidia Grace: And it's not just for academics.

"Climate change is imperiling coral reefs around the world". Imperil is a more formal way of saying put something at risk, jeopardize or endanger it. We also say something is in peril; IN space PERIL. It is at risk, in jeopardy.

"Amanda's presentation was absolutely stellar". In this case, stellar means extremely well done, outstanding, wonderful. Stellar can also mean related to the stars. So, I guess here we're metaphorically saying that something is shining like a star.

"The housing market is showing signs of picking up again". A sign is an indication of something, in this case, a signal or a hint.

イデキョウヘイ: 知的好奇心とはそもそも何なのでしょうか？
ティム・ブランコ: それは世界についてもっと知りたい、より深い疑問に対する答えを見つけたいという欲求です。それがなければ、私たちの世界はこれまでのように進歩し、発展しはしないでしょう。知的好奇心は科学的発見、医学の飛躍的進歩、革新的な新技術の原動力となっているのです。
