Taikenmon was one of the twelve outer gates of the Heian-kyo palace, with the Saemonfu (Left Guard Office) responsible for its security. In the 13th year of Enryaku (794), during the construction of the imperial palace, Harima Province built the gate, and it was supervised by the Takebe clan, which is the origin of its name. Initially, it was called "Takebe Gate." Because it was located in the center of the eastern side, it was also called Nakamikado. In the 9th year of Konin (818), the plaque was renewed, and an inscription by Emperor Saga was displayed.
