I had a conversation with a student the other day regarding the nuance of English slang. English learners might not be aware about how some slang’s usage is changed based upon how you use it. I think everyone knows the slang ‘LOL’? When we type “LOL” like this, it usually means that whatever was said prior, or what you saw prior, was funny. However, if we type it like “lol”, it becomes more of a neutral reply to a message, or can even be used sarcastically, similar to the Japanese usage of （笑）. If something bad happens, like I miss my bus or train, I usually type out to my friends: “Having a great day! Missed my bus! lol !!” It is to be noted that this type of usage of these words is something common amongst the younger generation, so take note that an older person posting on their Facebook with the lowercase lol isn’t sarcastic!
There’s also another way to use it, wherein you can type “lol…?” as a kind of like, “huh, what?” type feeling. If someone says something weird or I hear of a weird situation, usually I reply something like, “lol…?”
There are many ways to use slang and I think nuances can be perceived over text as well as with verbal/in-person speech! Try it out for yourselves if you have some English-speaking friends or see how its used by observing some English texting!

先日、英語のスラングのニュアンスについて生徒とお話をしました。英語学習者は、スラングの使い方がどのように変化するか知らないかもしれません。今回は「LOL」を例にしたスラングのニュアンスについて話したいと思います！「LOL」というスラングは誰でも知っていると思いますが、このように「LOL」とタイプすると、通常はその前に言われたこと、あるいはその前に見たことが面白かったという意味になります。しかし、「lol」のように打つと、YesともNoとも取れない中立的な返事になり、日本語の「笑」のように皮肉に使うこともできます。バスや電車に乗り遅れたときなど、何か悪いことが起こったとき、私は友達にこのようなメッセージを送ります！： 「“Having a great day! Missed my bus! lol !!” / “良い一日を！バスに乗り遅れた！（笑）”」 このような使い方は若い世代に多いので、年配の人がフェイスブックに小文字のlolで投稿したからといって嫌味にはならないので注意しましょう！
また、"lol...? "と入力することで、「はぁ、何？」というような意味合いになります。誰かが変なことを言ったり、変なシチュエーションを聞いたりした際に私は大抵 "lol...? "と返します！
スラングにはいろいろな使い方があり、口頭や対面での会話だけでなく、テキスト上でも様々なニュアンスを感じ取ることができます！英語を話す友達がいる人はぜひ試してみてください！
