Today I will tell you about a city in Illinois called Springfield.

今日は、イリノイ州にある「スプリングフィールド」という場所を紹介します！

Although Chicago is well known as the largest city in Illinois, Springfield is the capital city of Illinois.　Its population is 114,394 people, making it the seventh largest city in Illinois.

It is the second largest city in Illinois if you don’t include cities in the Chicago metropolitan area.

イリノイ州の中で人口が一番多いシカゴではなく、スプリングフィールドがイリノイ州の首都です。人口は114,394人で、イリノイ州では7番目に人口が多い街です。シカゴメトロポリタンエリア(シカゴ都市圏)を含めなければ2位です！

The most famous resident of Springfield is Abraham Lincoln, who became president of the United States. In Springfield you can visit the Lincoln Home, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and the Abraham Lincoln Tomb.

You can also visit the Old State Capital, which serves as both a capital building and a museum. All of these are very popular tourist destinations in Springfield.

最も著名なスプリングフィールド出身者は16代目アメリカ大統領である「エイブラハム・リンカーン」です。スプリングフィールドでは、エイブラハム・リンカーン大統領博物館や、彼のお墓へ行くことも出来ます。

また、昔に使われていた州都の建物があり、今では「オールド・ステイト・キャピタル博物館」として親しまれています。

Today I will tell you a little about some places you can go sightseeing in Chicago, Illinois.

今日はシカゴの観光スポットについてお話します。

Chicago is home to many wonderful, famous museums. Visitors from all over the world flock to the museums all year round.

One of these museums is the Art Institute of Chicago.

It is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the entire world. It has over 300,000 works of art, and this is augmented by more than 30 special exhibitions mounted yearly.

シカゴには素晴らしい有名な博物館がたくさんあります。世界中から観光客が一年中美術館に集まってきます。そのうちのひとつがシカゴ美術館です。

この美術館は、全世界で最も古く、最も大きい美術館のひとつです。30万点以上の美術品を所蔵し、年間30以上の特別展が開催されている。

Another Chicago Museum is the Museum of Science and Industry.

The Museum of Science and Industry, or MSI, is located in the Hyde Park neighborhood between Lake Michigan and University of Chicago.

もうひとつのオススメ博物館は、科学産業博物館（Museum of Science and Industry）です。科学産業博物館は、ミシガン湖とシカゴ大学の間のハイドパーク地区にあります。

Among the museum’s exhibits are a full-size replica coal mine, a German submarine captured during World War II, a 330 meters square model railroad, the command module of Apollo 8, and the first diesel-powered streamlined stainless-steel passenger train.

Pedway

Today I will tell you about a unique sightseeing area in Chicago called the Pedway.

今日はシカゴのユニークな観光地「ペドウェイ」をご紹介します！

The Chicago Pedway is a collection of underground tunnels that run beneath the city. The Pedway spans five miles, running under 40 blocks of the Loop (Chicago’s business district).

シカゴ・ペドウェイとは、シカゴの地下を走る地下トンネルの集合体のことです。このペドウェイはなんと約5マイル(約8km)にも及び、ループ(シカゴのビジネス街)の40ブロックの下を走っています。

It connects some of the city’s most famous buildings, including Macy’s, City Hall, and the Chicago Cultural Center.

Many people use the Pedway to escape hot summers and bitterly cold winters, using it for their daily commutes and lunch breaks.

メイシーズや市庁舎、シカゴ文化センターなど、シカゴで有名な建物達を結んでいます。

多くの人々が夏の暑さや厳しい冬の寒さから逃れるために、毎日の通勤や昼休みの際にこのペドウェイを利用しています。

The busiest part of the Pedway is under Millenium Station, a Metra train hub. A local nonprofit has raised $125,000 to transform the Pedway into a tourist attraction.

ここが最も混雑するのは、メトラ鉄道のハブ駅であるミレニアム駅の下です。地元の非営利団体は、ペドウェイを観光名所へと変えるため、12万5000ドル(約1900万円)超える寄付を集めました。

Plans include a farmers’ market and an underground library with a café and cozy reading nooks. If you are ever in Chicago, consider taking a walk in the Pedway!
