When I was in Busan as a liaison for Humbo Steel, the contact for me was Mr. Ha, one of the section managers of the company.  When Mr. Ha had been in the army, he had belonged to special forces, an elite corps.  During a hard training, one of the soldiers fell when he climbed up a cliff, and he entangled Mr. Ha who also fell.  Mr. Ha was OK during the rest of the training, but, after the training, in the evening, his injury got serious and, since then, he has walked with a limp.

Rookies were not allowed to drink all day during a hellish training.  In the evening, when rookies cross a river, they were ordered not to drink, but they drank because they were so thirsty.  Then after arriving at the opposite bank, their superior officers said,

“You look thirsty.  OK, you drink as much as you want.”

The superiors pressed rookies’ faces into the water until they almost were drowned.

If someone died in the hellish training, the training became easier for two weeks or so.   Rookies, therefore, wanted someone would die though they never mentioned it.  However in two weeks or so, the training got hellish again.

Seems like the Korean Army imitated the Imperial Japanese Army.  Park Chung-hee was Park Geun-hye’s father.  Park Chung-hee graduated from the military academy of the Imperial Japanese Army with brilliant academic records, though he was short in height.
