Resolutions: Conquering Obstacles & Setbacks
Just when you are getting into your new routine, you’re eating healthy, being more positive, or fitting in more exercise, you get an unexpected setback. A setback, no matter how big or small, sometimes makes you want to just throw in the towel. Remember, this happens to everyone!
Try these strategies to help you stay focused, move past those obstacles, and keep your resolutions on track:
Keep it in perspective. No one is perfect! Skipping one workout, or caving to a treat, doesn’t mean you failed, nor does it mean that the day is a write off. Don’t beat yourself up! Tomorrow is a new day.
Learn from your setbacks. We all experience challenges at some point; there is no reason to give up. Use setbacks as a way to prepare for next time. Pinpoint exactly what your setback was, then come up with ways to overcome similar situations in the future, to avoid it happening again.
Stay positive. Celebrate your accomplishments and be proud of them. Stay focused on the progress you have made. Consider setbacks as a way to keep you on your toes and stay motivated, not as something negative.
Set small, achievable goals. Every week, make sure you are setting goals that are achievable. Make a commitment to take the stairs every morning or replace your afternoon cookie with an apple. Think of everyday as a stepping stone to accomplishing your goal. Celebrate success and let it motivate you!
Remember the reason you are doing it. If you lose sight as to why your goal is important, it’s easy to give up. Clarify exactly why you’re doing this; why you NEED to do this! Write it down and post it in a visible location.
