『青年空海の決断と実行』ー岡本光平
偉大な行動する宗教家、哲学者であり、日本最高峰の筆跡を書き残した空海は、少なくとも15歳から遣唐使船に乗る31歳までの多感な17年間を奈良で過ごしました。
シルクロードの東の終着点である国際都市奈良は、空海の青春時代のホームグラウンドであり、奈良という培養器がスーパー芸術家の空海を育てたとも言えます。そして、その先に高野山という天空の聖地を造営しました。
青年空海は、青丹よし東大寺や大安寺の巨大な七重塔を仰ぎ見ながら、新しい理想を求めて大陸への雄飛の夢を実現させたのです。空海は選択と決断、不退と実行の人でした。
その空海の生い立ちや空海を育てた奈良の原風景、想い描いた西域世界や、時空を超えた修二会のような異界を現代の書で表現しました。

■"Kukai and the Capital of Nara"
The eminent religious leader and philosopher, Kukai, who left behind the finest calligraphy in Japan, spent at least 17 formative years in Nara, from at least the age of 15 until he boarded the envoy ships to Tang at the age of 31. The international city of Nara, the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, served as the home ground for Kukai's youthful days. It could be said that Nara, as a nurturing ground, cultivated the superb artist Kukai. And it was this nurturing that led Kukai to establish the sacred mountain site of Koyasan.
As a young man, while gazing upon the immense pagodas of Todaiji and Daianji, Kukai sought new ideals. He then realized his dream of soaring to the continent. Kukai was a man of choices, decisions, perseverance, and action.
This exhibition captures Kukai's upbringing, the foundational landscapes of Nara that shaped him, his envisioned realms in the Western regions, and otherworldly dimensions transcending time and space akin to the monastic practice —all expressed through contemporary calligraphy.
