1980年代前半に大活躍したプログレ・ハードのポップ・ロック・グループの代表4バンドの名曲集です。
その特徴は、アルバムは、めちゃくちゃ売れたのですが、批評家の評価は極端に低く、「産業ロック」と揶揄され、マニアからは相当馬鹿にされていたことです。歌詞が、歌謡曲的で、身近な恋愛のテーマが中心なので、より政治的・哲学的な重いテーマを好む人たちからは、軽薄と考えられていた面もあります。
その一方で、その演奏力・アレンジ・サウンドのクオリティーの高さは非凡なものがあり、ボーカルにも歌心があるので、当時、洋楽をそれほど聴かない人でも、よく耳にするほど、一般に広く聴かれ、とても人気がありました。さらに、その楽曲は、世界中で永く愛され、2000年代になっても、コマーシャルや番組テーマとして取り上げられ、リバイバルで話題になるなど、時代を超えて支持され続けているのです。
まずはエイジア（ASIA）から。
エイジアは、イングランド出身のロック・バンドで、1970年代に活躍したプログレッシブ・ロックの大御所グループ、キング・クリムゾン（ボーカル・ベース担当のジョン・ウェットン）、イエス（ギター担当のスティーブ・ハウ／キーボード担当のジェフ・ダウンズ）、EL &P （ドラムス担当のカール・パーマー）のメンバーだった4人が、1981年に結成した、プログレ界のスーパー・グループです。
しかし、どちらかというとリーダー的なプレイヤーではなく、補助的なメンバーばかりが集まっている感じではあります。（※キング・クリムゾンのリーダーはロバート・フリップ、イエスの中心メンバーはジョン・アンダーソンとクリス・スクワイア、ELPのリーダーはキース・エマーソンでした。）
こうして4人の縁の下の力持ち的な職人たちが集まって制作された1stアルバム「詠時感〜時へのロマン（Asia）」は、1982年にリリースされるや否や、爆発的に売れ、全世界で1500万枚のセールスを達成し、加えてビルボード年間アルバムチャートの全米1位を記録しました。まさに、怪物アルバムです。
しかし、その後、エイジアの人気は急速に尻すぼみになり、1983年リリースの2ndアルバム「アルファ」と1985年リリースの3rdアルバム「アストラ」は、日本以外ではセールス的にまったく振るわず、事実上の解散状態になりました。
日本では、3rdアルバムまで、なぜか根強く人気が持続していましたが、その後は、完全に活動停止状態になってしまい、日本でもエイジアは、あまり聴かれなくなりました。
1989年に再結成された後は、現在まで細々と活動が続けられていますが、バンドの全盛期は、やはり、1980年代前半だったと言えるでしょう。
次にフォリナー（Foreigner）です。
フォリナーは、イングランド出身のギタリストであるミック・ジョーンズとイングランド系アメリカ人ボーカリストのルー・グラムを中心に、1976年に、ニューヨークで結成されたアメリカン・プログレ・ハードを代表するロック・バンドです。
1977年にリリースされた1stアルバムは、売上400万枚のヒットを記録し、その後、2nd、3rdアルバムともに、安定したセールスを記録しました。
さらに1981年発表の4thアルバム「4」は全世界で1500万枚以上売り上げる大ヒットとなり、翌1982年度のビルボード年間アルバムチャートでは全米3位を記録しました。これが人気の頂点でした。
その後、1984年リリースの5thアルバム「プロヴォカトゥール」とシングル「アイ・ウォナ・ノウ」のNo1ヒットもありましたが、徐々にバンドの人気は緩やかな下降線を辿り、1990年代以降は人気が低迷します。
それでも、2000年代の再ブームなどもあって、現在に至るまで、バンドの活動は続けられているようです。
続いてTOTO（トト）の説明に入ります。
TOTOは、アメリカ出身のロック・バンドで、1978年に、ロサンゼルスの腕利きスタジオ・セッション・ミュージシャンを集めて結成されました。中心メンバーは、超売れっ子ドラマーのジェフ・ポーカロ、ギタリストのスティーブ・ルカサー、キーボード奏者のデヴィッド・ペイチ、シンセサイザー奏者のスティーブ・ポーカロなど。
卓越した演奏力とアレンジ力で、1980年代前半のポップ・ロック・サウンドをリードしました。そのサウンドは、今聴いても、まったく古さを感じさせません。
そして、フォリナーの重く暗い〈陰〉の音に対して、明るい〈陽〉の音のTOTOというイメージがあります。
TOTOの人気を決定づけたのは、1982年にリリースされた4thアルバム「聖なる剣（TOTO Ⅳ）」でした。この傑作アルバムは、全世界で1200万枚を売り上げ、この年のグラミー賞で、「アルバム・オブ・ジ・イヤー」など6部門を受賞しました。
この「TOTO Ⅳ 聖なる剣」がヒットしていた1982年を頂点に、1980年代前半には、シカゴなど、TOTO 的なサウンドの音楽が、大ヒットして、ちまたにあふれていました。まさに、時代をリードしていました。
その後、1980年代後半に入ると、人気は徐々に下降していきましたが、現在に至るまで、グループは断続的に活動を続けています。
最後にスティクス（Styx）です。
スティクスは、アメリカ出身のロック・バンドで、1963年にシカゴで結成された「ザ・トレイドウンズ」が前身です。1970年に「スティクス」に改名され、1972年に1stアルバムがリリースされました。その後、徐々に人気は上昇し、1981年、10thアルバム「パラダイス・シアター（Paradise Theatre）」が、初の全米1位を記録しました。このアルバムは、同年のビルボード年間アルバムチャートでも全米6位を記録しています。
この時（1981年）が、日本も含めて、バンドの人気のピークでした。
その後、人気は急速に衰えていき、活動は停滞していきますが、現在もバンドは活動中です。
上記４つのバンドの共通点は、1981・1982年が、人気と活動の頂点であったこと、代表作となるアルバムが、この2年間の内にリリースされていること、そして、現在もグループの音楽活動が続いていることです。これは、ジャーニー含めて、当時活躍した、ほとんどすべてのプログレ・ポップ・ロック・バンドに当てはまる特徴でもあります。
その理由としては、この時期、どのバンドも、リリースした楽曲が普遍的な名曲揃いであること、サウンド・アレンジ・プレイが、卓越した非凡な域にあり、もはや、これ以上は望めない頂点に達していたことがあると思われます。加えて、スタジオでの録音技術が、技術的な頂点に達しており、臨場感あふれる音を、レコードで再現できるようになっていたことも挙げられるでしょう。
これら4バンドの当時の名曲を、独断と偏見によって15曲、選曲し推薦します。曲順は、バンドごとに発表年時順です。同一アルバム内では、アルバム内の曲順に準じます。
