REOスピードワゴンは、1967年に中西部のイリノイ州で結成され、1971年にデビューしたロック・バンドです。何度かメンバー・チェンジを繰り返しながら、バンド活動を続けていましたが、なかなかメジャーになることはありませんでした。
年に300回のコンサートをこなすツアー・バンドとして全米をまわり続けること、苦節10年、彼らが、初めて商業的に成功したアルバムは、1980年にリリースされた9枚目のオリジナル・スタジオ・アルバム「禁じられた夜（Hi Infidelity）」でした。この傑作アルバムは、翌1981年に、全米で最も売り上げたロック・アルバムとなり、最終的には1000万枚以上のセールスを記録することになりました。
ちなみに、1981年のビルボード年間アルバム・ランキングは、1位がREOスピードワゴンの「禁じられた夜（Hi Infidelity）」で、2位はジョン&ヨーコの「ダブル・ファンタジー」でした。暗殺されたジョンの遺作よりも、スピードワゴンの方が売れていたのは驚きです。
加えて言うと、1981年度ビルボード年間アルバムチャートの4位は、この年のグラミー賞史上初の5部門独占したクリストファー・クロスのロングセラー・ファースト・アルバム「南から来た男」、さらに年間6位は、スティクス初のチャートNo.1アルバムとなった「パラダイス・シアター」でした。そして、年間10位はブルース・スプリングスティーンの名盤「リバー」という錚々たる顔ぶれです。
スピードワゴンは、その後、1982年の10thアルバム「グッド・トラブル」、1984年の11thアルバム「ホイールズ・アー・ターニン」と立て続けにヒットを飛ばし、1980年代前半に、バンドの黄金期を築きました。
このバンドの特色は、ライブで鍛えられた卓越した演奏力に裏打ちされたロック・サウンドと、キャッチーでメロディアスで勢いのある明るい楽曲の数々にあります。
ヴォーカルのケヴィン・クローニンの美しいハイトーン・ヴォイスと、ギターのゲイリー・リッチラスのハードでメロディアスな音色、キーボードのニール・ドーティのリリカルで疾走感のあるプレイが、うねりのある独特のサウンドを作り出します。
一曲一曲の魅力は「禁じられた夜」が頂点ですが、アルバム全体のサウンドの完成度と躍動感という点では、私見ではありますが、「グッド・トラブル」の方が上だと思います。そして、「ホイールズ・アー・ターニン」は、両者の特徴をミックスした感じのバランスのとれたアルバムです。
1990年台以降は、人気が衰えますが、それでも、同時代のバンドであるジャーニーのように、なんだかんだとメンバー交代を繰り返しながら、現在も活動を続けているようです。
ここでは、上記した全盛期の3枚のアルバムから、代表曲10曲を紹介します。
