今日は
あまり知られていないと思われる意味で
arrest
が使われていたのを読んだので、
それを共有しますね
arrestっていう単語をみて
最初に思い浮かべる意味はなんでしょう？
たぶん、
ほとんどの人が、
逮捕する
という意味を
思い浮かべると思うんですね。
一方、
こちらはBBCの記事で
パンダの減少がとまって
増え始めたと言う内容です。
"Evidence from a series of range-wide national surveys indicate that the previous population decline has been arrested, and the population has started to increase," said the IUCN's updated report.
長くて読みづらいと思われた方は
Evidence indicated that population decline has been arrested
もしくは
population decline has been arrested
だけでもいいです。
この中では
arrestは
停止する、止まる
という意味で使われています
ただ、これは
前後からも推測できますね。
パンダの数の減少が◯◯して、
数が増え始めた。
となると
これは
減少がとまったんだな
と推測できるわけです。
