Well in the Western culture that I grew up in, it's pretty much the norm to be called by our first names, nicknames, or the street names. I'm usually called by the nickname of my first name. My first name is officially in Latin, but no one could really pronounce it, not even my priest. (LOL) My family love calling me the Italian version of the name, but I hate the it, because it would be the exactly the same as the sidekick of one of the Nintendo's masterpiece game, wearing a green cap! The German version of my name, I sort of like the sound of it, which would be same as the first name of Beethoven, but it just makes everybody's lives easier by sticking with the nickname that has simple English.

The thing is, it's very rare to be called by our family name, unless it's a very formal meetings. Well, some jobs such as the teachers, doctors, priests and other professions have more chances being addressed with their family name along with appropriate titles, but most of the jobs aren't like that. Of course, the first time meetings of any sort would start out referring one another by the last name following appropriate title of honors, but usually we would say "call me so and so" to one another to lift the "formality" off.

The only time that I remember being called by my last names would be the time I was usually in deep shits. In schools or at home, the parents regularly call their kids with nicknames or the given name, but when teachers and parents became angry, they would call their children using first name and last name; and if they use the whole name including the middle name, you just know you are in a deep trouble! So, my relationship to my last name aren't that great, if you know what I mean. (LOL) I mean, even today, when I am referred with my last name, I feel like saying, "I didn't do it!!", in a split second, as if it's an automatic reflex!

In the sporting teams, I am usually called by a special nickname "Comet", that obviously isn't derived from my first name. Usually, a name such as "Comet" would be suitable as a name for pets, but I've been called that ever since I started out playing Ice hockey. I believe I started playing Ice Hockey a bit earlier than I started baseball (or tee ball). At the time, and still am to some extent, I was the smallest one in the team, but the fastest. I could skate faster than others in the same age range, but to be honest, it was because I never learned how to "stop". In the Ice Hockey, it's not that "serious matter", because we could just body check somebody else to stop... to some extent. So, till I learned the proper ways to stop, I usually went after other kids to give them a "check" for me to stop. Well, that earned me the name "Comet", speedy but couldn't be stopped till it hits something! (LOL) I think my coach started to call me that, and everybody else followed. Even today, my baseball & Ice Hockey team mates call me that, although I had learned to stop as I wish! (LOL)
