Silver Week: Last Day
"Red Bean Rice"
Today, September 23rd, is "Autumnal Equinox Day" (
秋分の日:shuubun).
Autumnal Equinox Day is a day on which ancestors are honored, and the deceased remembered.
This has been a Buddhist festival day from ancient times.
Red Bean Rice (
赤飯:sekihan)
is a Japanese traditional dish, made from sticky rice steamed with azuki beans which give it a reddish color to the rice, hence its name.
Red Bean Rice is served on special occasions throughout the year like on birthdays and holidays.
It is also made to honor our ancestors during Buddhist festivals.
The color red is symbolic of happiness in Japan. (

This sekihan was made by Mrs. Watanabe who gets up at the crack of dawn to make it!
