A long time ago when our daughter was a junior high school student, my wife had a chance to attend a meeting with teachers, parents and students.
The theme was how to make our children study school subjects hard. Many hot opinions were exchanged and suggested by parents and teachers according to the theme.
娘が中学生だったとき、妻はその中学のいわゆる父兄、先生と子どもの三者懇談に参加する機会がありました。そのテーマはいかに子どもたちを真剣に勉強させるかだった。そのテーマに沿って多くの白熱した意見が交わされた。
When it was my wife’s turn to express her opinion, she said, “ If our children don’t like to study, we won’t have to force them study and just let them do what they like.”
A silence came to the meeting.
妻の意見を述べる番になったとき、彼女は「子どもたちが勉強が嫌いなら無理にさせる必要はない、子どもたちの好きなようにさせたらいい。」と言ったら、静けさがその会議に漂ったらしい。
Our daughter asked her mother never to attend the school meeting anymore. Since then I was the one who had attended the school meetings.
娘は二度と学校の会議には来ないでと頼んだ。
それ以来、この種の学校の会議に出席するのは私になった。
すみません、妻は当時はまだ日本語が拙く日本社会とのギャップもかなりあったと思います。
今はもう少し改善されている筈？です。
