「胡散（うさん）臭い」という日本語に対して“dubious”という形容詞による英訳を最近見た。私は「胡散臭い」という語は口語でもあまり使わないが、また“dubious”という形容詞も初めてであった。
「胡散臭い」を広辞苑で引くと、「どことなく疑わしい、何となく怪しい」という意味で、「胡散（うさん）」の語源も外来語含めて様々な説があるようである。
「胡」を漢和辞典で引くと「ぼやけていてあいまいな、いいかげんな」という意味があり、「胡散」で「いいかげんに散らした」となるから「疑わしい、怪しい」の意味もまあ頷ける。

Dubious:
1) If you describe something as dubious, you mean that you do not consider it to be completely honest, safe, or reliable.
「ある物が完全に誠実で、安全または信頼できると看做すことができない様子」
2) If you are dubious about something, you are not completely sure about it and have not yet made up your mind about it.
「ある物について完全に確信を持っておらず、まだ決心していない様子」
3) If you say that someone has the dubious honor or the dubious pleasure of doing something, you are indicating that what they are doing is not an honor or pleasure at all, but is, in fact, unpleasant or bad.
