接尾辞（“suffix”）を上手く使うことにより、より簡潔な英文を書くことができる。“-wise” もそんな接尾辞の一つである。以下定義を確認する。
-wise:
1) -wise is added to nouns to form adverbs indicating that something is the case when considering the particular thing mentioned.
「既に言及した特定の物を考慮すれば、ある事が真となることを示す副詞を作る場合に、当該名詞に “-wise” を付加する。」
2) -wise is added to nouns to form adverbs indicating that someone behaves in the same way as the person or thing that is mentioned.
「言及する人または物と同じ方法で、ある人が振る舞うことを示す副詞を作るために、当該名詞に “-wise” を付加する。」

以下、例文を挙げる。
Career-wise, the applicant left something to be desired.
「その応募者は、経歴の点では、いま一つ物足りなかった。」
As that work was voluntary, it was flexible, time-wise (= in terms of time).
「その仕事はボランティア（無償）だったので、時間的には柔軟だった。」
The operator rotated the dial in an anticlockwise (a counterclockwise) direction.

Rinse and slice the zucchinis crosswise.

He, struggling with too many chairs, moved crabwise toward the door.
