懐かしい原画も… キャプテン翼展
「キャプテン翼」は1981～88年に「週刊少年ジャンプ」（集英社）で連載され、コミックスはシリーズ累計で6500万部以上を発行。その後も続編が描かれ、現在は「グランドジャンプ」（同）で最新作「ライジングサン」を連載中で、主人公の大空翼がU23の日本代表主将として五輪の頂点を目指して活躍している。
高橋さんが初めてサッカーに注目したのは、78年のW杯アルゼンチン大会だった。テレビで偶然に観戦し、「フィールドがキャンバスのようで、ドラマチックなスポーツ」とほれこんだ。高校卒業と同時にマンガ家を志した高橋さんは野球に加えサッカーをマンガの題材とするようになり、「キャプテン翼」がデビュー作となった。
当時はサッカーがマイナースポーツだったため、11人でチームを組むこと、W杯のことも丁寧に説明する必要があった。連載当初の評判は今ひとつだったが、第4話で描いた翼のオーバーヘッドキックが読者を驚かせて人気がアップした。
当時のスポーツマンガは、血のにじむ努力をした末に勝つ……といういわゆる“スポ根もの”が主流だったが、「キャプテン翼」は悲壮感はなく、スター選手が超絶的なテクニックを繰り出して活躍する痛快さで異彩を放った。高橋さんは「サッカーは楽しいからやっているのが原点」と作品を貫くテーマを語っており、翼の名せりふ「ボールは友達」も、「皆がサッカーが好きであってほしい」という思いが込められているという。
そんな高橋さんのお気に入りのキャラクターは翼の親友・石崎。最初はチームの補欠だったが、努力を重ねて代表に呼ばれるまでに成長する。高橋さんは「翼が天才ならその逆で、裏のテーマ。皆が翼になれるわけではないが石崎なら……と子供に夢を持たせたかった」と話す。
◇必殺シュートに熱狂
そしてサッカー少年たちを熱狂させたのが数々の必殺技だ。「こんなことができたら……と思って描くんです。ゴールネットを突き破るシュートも、ゴールのネットがほころんでいれば突き破れないかな？というのが発想の原点」といい、オーバーヘッドキックや、かかとでボールを頭上に蹴り上げるヒールリフト、ドライブシュートなど実在の技はもちろん、ゴールキーパーがポストを蹴って跳びセーブする「三角跳び」、コンクリートにボールがめり込むほどの強烈なシュート「タイガーショット」などのオリジナル技も登場した。
◇誕生から四半世紀
その必殺技をJリーガーが再現した動画が3月から順次ネットに公開され話題となった。14日に東京・上野で「キャプテン翼展」が開幕するなど、誕生から四半世紀がたっても人気は健在だ。
日本がW杯に一度も出たことがない時代に「日本をW杯で優勝させる」と宣言した翼。最新作「ライジングサン」は五輪が舞台で、高橋さんは「W杯を先にするか、五輪を描くか迷った」と笑いながら「代表を応援する意味もありますし、皆が元気になれる作品を描きたい」と話している。その日本のW杯優勝について高橋さんは「（出場する以上可能性は）ゼロではないし、今までで一番優勝できる可能性は高いと思う」と期待を寄せている。
