ワールドカップ（Ｗ杯）ブラジル大会に向けて米国フロリダ州で合宿中の日本代表（ＦＩＦＡランク４７位）は６日（日本時間７日）、タンパでザンビア代表（同７６位）と国際親善試合を行い、４―３で勝利。０―２から前半４０分にＦＷ本田圭佑（２７＝ＡＣミラン）がＰＫを決めて１点差とすると、後半にはＦＷ香川真司（２５＝マンチェスターＵ）、本田が立て続けにゴールを決めて３―２と逆転。同４４分にミドルシュートを決められて追いつかれたが、ロスタイムにＦＷ大久保嘉人（３１＝川崎Ｆ）が勝ち越しゴールを決めてＷ杯前最後の国際Ａマッチを白星で締めた。
日本はコスタリカ戦からスターティングメンバー５人を入れ替え、右ふくらはぎの痛みを訴えていたＤＦ長友佑都（２７＝インテル・ミラノ）も先発。ＧＫは西川周作（２７＝浦和）が昨年１１月のオランダ戦以来のスタメンとなった。
Ｗ杯前最後の国際試合を白星で締めたい日本は立ち上がりから相手陣内で試合を進めるも、先制点を挙げたのはザンビア。前半９分、右サイドからのクロスをニアサイドでつなぎ、ファーサイドでＤＦ内田篤人（２６＝シャルケ）に競り勝ったＣ・カトンゴが先制ヘッドを叩き込んだ。
同２９分にはセットプレーから２失点目。右ＣＫでショートコーナーと見せかけてグラウンダーのクロスを送ると、ニアでスルーし、ＭＦシンカラが右足でミドルシュートを決めて２―０とリードを広げた。

同１４分にはＤＦ森重真人（２７＝ＦＣ東京）、ＦＷ大迫勇也（２４＝１８６０ミュンヘン）が、ＤＦ今野泰幸（３１＝Ｇ大阪）と負傷した岡崎に代わって出場。２１分には内田に代えてＤＦ酒井宏樹（２４＝ハノーバー）が投入された。
日本は後半２８分、香川が左サイドから中央に切り込み、エリア手前から中央の大久保を狙ったクロス。ボールは大久保に触れず直接ゴールに吸い込まれ、２―２の同点に追いついた。２分後には途中出場の森重がドリブル突破してグラウンダーのクロスを送ると、ゴール前の本田が押し込み３―２と勝ち越した。
しかし後半４４分、ザンビアに左サイドから強烈なミドルシュートを決められて３―３を試合は振り出しに。しかし同４６分、交代出場したばかりのＭＦ青山敏弘（２８＝広島）のロングパスを大久保が左足で決めて勝ち越し、劇的な勝利でＷ杯前最後の国際試合を締めくくった。
日本は７日にタンパを出発し、ブラジルでの拠点となるサンパウロ北西部のイトゥへ移動。１４日（日本時間１５日）の１次リーグＣ組初戦でコートジボワールと対戦する。
