My fellow citizens.
I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you've bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors.
I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generousity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath.
The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace.
Yet, every so often, the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms.
At these moments,America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We, the People, have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears and true to our founding documents.
これまで44人のアメリカ人が大統領就任の宣誓を行ってきました。
その宣誓は、繁栄が上げ潮のように高まっているときになされたこともあれば、なぎのような平和のなかでなされたこともありました。
しかし、暗雲が立ち込め、嵐が荒れ狂うなかでなされる宣誓もたびたびありました。
そのようなときにもアメリカが持ちこたえられたのは、単に指導者の手腕や先見性のおかげだけではなく、私たち「合衆国人民」が先人の理想と建国の文書に忠実であり続けたからなのです。
So it has been.
So it must be with this generation of Americans.
これまではそうでした。
そして今の世代のアメリカ人もそうでなければなりません。

オバマ大統領はスピーチが得意です。
彼のように大勢の聴衆の前で堂々と熱いメッセージを話せるスキルは、
どこででも役にたつでしょうね。
それに僕はこの本で、ただ英語とスピーチの両方を学ぼうと思って買いましたが、
読んでいるとアメリカの歴史にも興味が出てきました。
彼が黒人である事がたびたび彼自身のスピーチに出てきており、
アメリカは人種差別を今も少しずつ乗り越えながら
成長しているのだなと感じています。
もっとアメリカを知りたいと思える本です。
