Vocabulary building
- kernel of truth: わずかな真実
C: a kernel of truth means one small starting point is true but the rest of the story might be sort of built up or exaggerateed or even untrue. "grain of salt"も似た意味。
- tie th knot: 結婚する
knotは「（ひもなどの）結び目」。そこから転じて「きずな、縁」の意味を持ち、この形で「縁を結ぶ→結婚する」という口語表現をなす
- baby step: ほんのわずかな歩み
- strike someone as:(人に）…であると思わせる。感心させる。
- deem：（…と）見なす
- sanction ：是認する、認める。
C: sanction is a kind of an interesting word. It has opposite meanings depending on how you use it. In this case, it means allow or encourage, condone, say something OK, but you can also use it to mean punish when you're trying to stop somebody from doing it.
- rumor has it (that)...: ･･･といううわさ、
C: This is a phrase people often use when they are saying something they've heard from someone else. Similar phrases are they say, I heard, a little bird. If you're speaking more formally, perhaps unnamed sources.

- brink: 瀬戸際、ふち → Four major insurance companies are on the brink of bankruptcy.

- crux: 核心、最重要点 → This is the crux of the problem.
