SEPANG (Sept 20, 2011): The KL International Airport (KLIA) Customs Department foiled an attempt by a foreign student of a local private college to smuggle in 1.5kg of methamphetamine (syabu) worth about RM375,000 hidden in lip gloss tubes.

Govinden said the baggage scan did not reveal anything but the officers were curious as to why the suspect, a male in his early 30s, was carrying lip gloss tubes with him.

Taxi drivers made anti-corruption ambassadors

Taxi drivers have been made the "eyes and ears" of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to help curb corruption.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said taxi drivers are "ambassadors" as they are among the front-liners who interact with the foreigners and public.

"The involvement of people from all walks of life is important in fighting corruption.

"Taxi drivers are those who frequently interact with the public, they can get a lot of information from their passengers," said Nazri at the launch of ighting Corruption Through Taxi Drivers campaign at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

He added that if they know of such activities, and think their information is valuable, they should step forward to report to the MACC.

“For example, if they suspect some of their passengers may be involved in graft activities, then they should immediately take the passengers to any MACC office and lodge a report,” said Nazri.

He added that apart from being informants, they can also spread information on combating graft to their passengers to create more public awareness.

Also present was MACC chief Datuk Seri Abu Kassim Mohamed.

Nazri said to kick off the campaign, some 200 taxi drivers have been selected to take part in the campaign, adding that more will be roped in, in the future.

Nazri added he hoped MACC will also work with other government agencies such as the Road Transport Department to further expand the campaign.

Asked if incentives or rewards will be provided for taxi drivers who take part in the campaign and become informants, Nazri said it was possible.

"I think MACC will discuss that later. It is possible," he said.

Asked if trainings will be provided for the taxi drivers in order for them to be familiar with information on curbing corruption, Nazri said: "We know that they (taxi drivers) play an important role so perhaps MACC can work with NGOs or government agencies on giving them training. That will be discussed."

Meanwhile, when asked if the MACC is continuing to investigate Custom officers under the 3b operation, Nazri said: “MACC will issue a statement soon.”

In April, over 60 Custom officers of various ranks and posts were arrested by the MACC under the 3b operation for alleged involvement in corruption, money laundering and other offences.

Noda lauds crisis workers in visit to Fukushima

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda on Thursday visited the leaking Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant — his first trip to the prefecture since taking the reins of power.

With no end to the 6-month-old nuclear crisis in sight, Noda visited the crippled plant to inspect reactor buildings and encourage workers."Everyone in the country and the world is hoping for an end to the (nuclear) accident," Noda, clad in blue protective gear, told about 200 workers at the plant.

"You're the key to whether we can overcome" the crisis, he told the workers. "I'll work hard, too, in concert with you."

During his one-day trip, Noda also visited J-Village, a former training site for athletes that is being used as a base for efforts to contain the world's worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl.

"You've been highly praised by the public," Noda told the Self-Defense Forces members struggling to bring the nuclear emergency under control and decontaminate areas tainted by the plant.

"As chief of the SDF, I'm really proud of you" Noda said.

Later in the day, the new prime minister was set to meet Gov. Yuhei Sato to discuss the government's plan to build a temporary storage facility in the prefecture for radioactive waste.

When Sato was suddenly informed of the plan last month by former Prime Minister Naoto Kan, he voiced his displeasure, saying: "It's an abrupt proposal. We are very baffled."
