この課では接続法の使いかたをさらに詳しく見て行きましょう。
サン・ジョバンニ・イン・ラテラーノ大聖堂。この教会、ローマの司教座聖堂と聞いて驚くユリでしたが、その後二人は一体何を話していたのでしょうか？
マッテオ先生：
Ascoltiamo il dialogo.
（Let's listen to the dialogue.）

B: Bruno Y: Yuri
B: Questa è la cattedrale di Roma, la Chiesa più importante.
Y: In effetti, è la chiesa più solenne che abbia mai visto.
B: Vero?
Y: Ma non è San Pietro la più importante di Roma.
B: Molti pensano così, ma in realtà è questa la chiesa principale.
Y: Non lo sapevo.
B: Nonostante sia lontana dal centro, vale la pena di visitarla. Non credi?
＜英訳＞
B: This is the cathedral of Rome, the most important Church.
Y: Indeed, it is the most solemn church I have ever seen.
B: Right?
Y: But St. Peter's is not the most important in Rome.
B: Many people think so, but in reality, this is the main church.
Y: I didn't know.
B: Even though it is far from the center, it is worth a visit. Don't you think so?
●La frase chiave（The key phrase）
Nonostante sia lontana dal centro, vale la pena di visitarla.

亜希子先生：
★nonostanteのような特定の接続詞の後には接続法を使います。
よく使うものを例文で確認しておきましょう。
寒いけれど、私たちはテラスで食事する方がいいです。
Nonostante faccia freddo, preferiamo mangiare in terrazza.
（Even though it is cold, we prefer to eat on the terrace.）
Devo pulire la camera prima che arrivino gli ospiti.
（I have to clean the room before the guests arrive.）
●Impariamo ２（Let's learn ２）
亜希子先生：
2つ目のポイントです。
実は皆さんがよく知っているperchéという接続詞も後ろに接続法を使います。でも、これを聞いて「あれ？」って思われた方も多いのではないでしょうか？
マッテオ先生：
Eh sì. Perché dopo perché di solito si usa l'indicativo.
（Well yes. Because after perché we usually use the indicative.）
亜希子先生：
そう。まさに今マッテオが言ったように、perchéは後ろに直接法を使うこともできるからですね。
▼でも実は後ろに直接法を使うか接続法を使うかによって、perchéは意味が変わるので要注意なんです。
マッテオ先生：
Esatto. Quando si usa con l'indicativo perché esprime una causa, invece con il congiuntivo esprime un obiettivo.
（Exactly. When used with the indicative because it expresses a cause, however with the subjunctive it expresses an objective.）
亜希子先生：
はい。
▼perchéは「なぜなら」と理由を表す場合には、後ろに直接法を使います。普段皆さんになじみがあるのはこちらの意味ですよね。
▼それに対して、
後ろに接続法を使うと、perchéは「～するために、～するように」と目的を表す表現になるんです。
例文で確認してみましょう。
Ti accompagno in macchina alla stazione perché tu non perda il treno.
※perché +接続法 perda
（I'll drive you to the station so that you don't miss the train.）
Ti accompagno in macchina alla stazione perché piove tanto.
※perché +直接法piove
（I'll drive you to the station because it's raining so much.）

さて、今回ご紹介するローマ豆知識は？
マッテオ先生：
Perché il Papa risiede al Vaticano?
（Why does the pope reside at the Vatican?）
「どうして教皇はバチカンにいるの？」
亜希子先生：
サン・ジョバンニ・イン・ラテラーノ大聖堂がローマの司教座聖堂としてバチカンのサンピエトロ大聖堂よりも重要な教会ならば、どうして現在教皇がバチカンにいるのか疑問に感じた方もいるのではないでしょうか？
マッテオ先生：
Adesso, che il Santo Papa risiede al Vaticano è scontato, ma in realtà in passato viveva nella residenza papale annessa alla Basilica di San Giovanni Laterano.
（Now, it is obvious that the Holy Pope resides in the Vatican, but in reality, in the past he lived in the papal residence annexed to the Basilica of San Giovanni Laterano.）
亜希子先生：
そう。実は中世の教皇はバチカンではなく、長らくサン・ジョバンニ・イン・ラテラーノ大聖堂横の教皇宮に住んでいたんです。そもそもローマ教皇はローマの司教なので、ローマ司教座聖堂であるサン・ジョバンニ・イン・ラテラーノ大聖堂こそ教皇のいるべき場所なのですが、そこから教皇がバチカンに移動したのは15世紀のこと。
マッテオ先生：
Una delle cause è da ricondurre al fatto che la residenza papale andò in rovina nel quattordicesimo secolo, quando la sede dello Stato Pontificio fu portata fuori Roma.
（One of the causes can be traced back to the fact that the papal residence fell into ruin in the fourteenth century when the seat of the Papal States was taken outside Rome.）
亜希子先生：
そうですね。14世紀に教皇庁がローマを離れてフランスのアヴィニョンに移動していた間に、ラテラーノの教皇宮がかなり荒廃してしまったこともあるのですが、もう一つきっかけとなったのは、教皇にとって聖ペテロとの関係を強調する必要があったから。実は初代の教皇は聖ペテロと言われていて。キリストの筆頭弟子である聖ペテロとの繋がりを強調することは、ローマの司教としてだけでなく、カトリックの普遍的トップとしての教皇の権威を表明する上でも重要なことでした。そのために15世紀以降の教皇は聖ペテロに捧げられた教会のあるバチカンに居を移し、バチカン一帯の大改築を行ったんですね。
マッテオ先生：
Quindi spostare la sede al Vaticano è stato un modo per legittimare il potere universale del Papa, in quanto diretto successore di San Pietro.
（So moving the headquarters to the Vatican was a way to legitimize the universal power of the Pope, as the direct successor of Saint Peter.）
亜希子先生：
そうなんです。ただ、残されたラテラーノの教皇宮も荒れ果てたままではなく、16世紀の教皇によって改築され、美しい姿に生まれ変わりました。20世紀にムッソリーニの下でイタリア王国と教皇庁との間で結ばれたラテラノ条約の調印が行われたのも、実はこの場所なんですよ。ちなみに現在、ラテラノの教皇宮は予約制で見学が可能。美しい内部装飾やラテラノ条約のオリジナル文書も見られるので、興味がある方はぜひサイトをチェックしてみてくださいね。
