（Walking around Rome）

亜希子先生：
この課では接続法過半過去の不規則活用について学びます。
サン・クレメンテ教会。地下に昔の教会が残っているサンクレメンテ教会。降りて雰囲気の違いに驚いていたゆりですが、実はこの教会にはまだ秘密があるようですよ。
マッテオ先生：

B: Bruno Y: Yuri
B: La Basilica di San Clemente è famosa anche per i sotterranei. C'è una chiesa antica qui sotto.
Y: Interessantissimo. Scendiamo.
Y: Non pensavo che cambiasse così tanto l'atmosfera.
B: In realtà ci sono altri due piani sotto di noi. Quando sono venuto l'anno scorso non immaginavo che ci fossero anche altri sotterranei di epoca romana.
Y: Quando si scendono queste scale sembra di fare un viaggio nel tempo.

B: The Basilica of San Clemente is also famous for its underground. There is an ancient church down here.
Y: Very interesting. Let's go down.
Y: I didn't think it would change the atmosphere that much.
B: There are actually two more floors below us. When I came last year I didn't imagine that there were also other Roman-era underground cellars.
Y: When you descend these stairs, it feels like time travel.

2つ目のポイントです。
essere以外の不規則な形の接続法半過去の動詞を確認しましょう。

io dicessi, tu dicessi, lui [lei] dicesse
noi dicessimo, voi diceste, loro dicessero

亜希子先生：
どれも語幹の部分が不規則ですね。皆さんそれぞれ発音練習してみてください。声に出して発音するうちに活用が体になじんできますよ。
※（下線部について）そうなんでしょうね。英語の不規則動詞活用を覚える時も、かけ算九九のうように何度も言って覚えるのが、結局早道だった気がする。
Non pensavo che a Milano facesse così freddo.
（I didn't think it was so cold in Milan.）
I suoi genitori credevano che lui dicesse bugie.

さて、今回ご紹介するローマ豆知識は？
マッテオ先生：
Un viaggio nel tempo
（A journey through time）
「階段を下りて過去にタイムトラベル？」
亜希子先生：
階段を下りて過去にタイムトラベル。今回のスキットの舞台であるサンクレメンテ教会の地下について、もう少し詳しくお話ししましょう。
マッテオ先生：
È incredibile come a Roma più si scende giù di livello, e più si torni indietro nel tempo, no?
（It's amazing how in Rome the further down you go, the more you go back in time, isn't it?）
亜希子先生：
そうそう。現在の教会は新たに再建されたもの。ただ、新しいとは言っても、12世紀に建てられたものですけどね。この教会もモザイクや15世紀のマゾリーノのフレスコ画などを見ごたえがあるのですが、やっぱり気になるは地下の部分ですよね。一つ下に降りると、4世紀のもともとの教会跡を見ることができるんです。
マッテオ先生：
Insomma, la chiesa attuale è stata costruita sulla base di quella che c'era prima.
（In short, the current church was built on the basis of what was there before.）
亜希子先生：
そう。オリジナルの教会は、ノルマン人の略奪などによって荒れ果ててしまったため、その上に新たな教会を作ったんです。
マッテオ先生：
D'altra parte a Roma questa è una cosa del tutto normale, no?
（On the other hand, in Rome this is a completely normal thing, right?）
亜希子先生：
まあ確かにローマではこういうことはよくあることなんですが、この教会の面白いところは、さらにその下に古代ローマ時代の遺跡があること。
マッテオ先生：
Quindi si possono tuttora osservare i resti dell'antica Roma di prima che diventasse una chiesa?
（So can we still observe the remains of ancient Rome before it became a church?）
亜希子先生：
はい、この古代ローマの遺跡は、一見すると一つのようにも見えるのですが、実は二つの異なる年代に属する遺跡から構成されているんです。まず、私たちを迎えてくれるのが、2世紀のミトラ教の神殿跡。
マッテオ先生：
Il Mitraismo è un'antica religione giunta a Roma dalla Siria. Quindi ancor prima della costruzione della chiesa cristiana, questo era già un'importante luogo di culto.
（Mithraism is an ancient religion that came to Rome from Syria. So even before the construction of the Christian church, this was already an important place of worship.）
亜希子先生：
ミトラ教は１世紀から２世紀ごろ、シリアからローマにもたらされた宗教。キリスト教の教会になる前から、この場所が信仰の場所だったとは、なんだか感慨深いですよね。そして、そこから数段下にあるのが１世紀の邸宅跡。これはネロ帝時代の大火で焼失した建物の残りと言われています。ただし、この部分はいまだ発掘作業中、もしかしたらまだまだこれからもっと古い遺跡が見つかるかもしれませんよ。
マッテオ先生：
Fantastico. Non solo nei suoi diversi strati si può percepire concretamente la storia di Roma, ma come se non bastasse, potrebbero esserci ulteriori scoperte. Merita assolutamente di essere visitata.
（Fantastic. Not only in its different layers you can concretely feel the history of Rome, but as if that were not enough, there may be further discoveries. It absolutely deserves to be visited.）
亜希子先生：
それにこの場所に行くと印象的なのは水の音。実はこの水の音こそが、この下に何かあるのかもと発掘を行うきっかけにもなったのです。音の正体は１番下の階を流れる水。これは古代ローマからの下水道システムに繋がっているそうなんです。薄暗く肌寒い地下に響き渡る水の音は、まさにローマの歴史の偉大さを身を持って感じさせてくれますよ。
