この課では接続法半過去の活用と使い方を学びます。
サン・クレメンテ教会。今回の舞台は、コロッセオの近くのサン・クレメンテ教会。小さな教会ですが、ローマならではのある特徴のある教会なんですよ。
マッテオ先生：

B: Bruno Y: Yuri
B: La Basilica di San Clemente è famosa anche per i sotterranei. C'è una chiesa antica qui sotto.
Y: Interessantissimo. Scendiamo.
Y: Non pensavo che cambiasse così tanto l'atmosfera.
B: In realtà ci sono altri due piani sotto di noi. Quando sono venuto l'anno scorso non immaginavo che ci fossero anche altri sotterranei di epoca romana.
Y: Quando si scendono queste scale sembra di fare un viaggio nel tempo.

B: The Basilica of San Clemente is also famous for its underground. There is an ancient church down here.
Y: Very interesting. Let's go down.
Y: I didn't think it would change the atmosphere that much.
B: There are actually two more floors below us. When I came last year I didn't imagine that there were also other Roman-era underground cellars.
Y: When you descend these stairs, it feels like time travel.

●Impariamo ２（Let's learn ２）
亜希子先生：
2つ目のポイントです。
接続法半過去の使い方を確認しましょう。
▼接続法半過去もcheなどの従属節の中で使うことは接続法現在と同じですが、違いはcheの節の前の主節の動詞の形です。
▼主節の動詞が過去時制の場合に接続法半過去を使います。
だから、今回のキーフレーズも主節の動詞がNon pensavoとpensareの半過去の形になっていましたね。
それでは例文で確認してみましょう。
Immaginavo che voi veniste in treno.
（I imagined you came by train.）
Il professore voleva che gli studenti studiassero di più.
（The professor wanted the students to study more.）

さて、今回ご紹介するローマ豆知識は？

「サン・シルベストロの小礼拝堂」
亜希子先生：
今回ご紹介するのは、サンティ・クワットロ・コロナーティ教会。スキットの舞台であるサン・クレメンテ教会のすぐ近くにある教会です。
マッテオ先生：
Probabilmente sono poche le persone che conoscono questa Chiesa. A dire il vero, nemmeno io la conoscevo.
（There are probably few people who know this Church. To tell you the truth, I didn't know it either.）
亜希子先生：
そうですね。あまり知られていませんが、ここもローマならではの豊かな歴史を感じさせてくれる教会なんで。緩やかな坂道の奥にそびえる教会は外から見ると要塞のような雰囲気を漂わせ、一見しただけだと教会だとは気がつかないかもしれません。また、教会の部分だけでなく、回廊や礼拝堂といった複数の建物で構成されている点でも非常にユニークなのですが、これはこの教会が何度も修復や改築を繰り返してきた証。
マッテオ先生：
Ma qual è il suo aspetto più interessante?
（But what is its most interesting aspect?）
亜希子先生：
教会本体も素敵なんですが、おすすめはやっぱり教会入り口手前の右側にあるサンシルベストロの小礼拝堂。この小礼拝堂に描かれている美しいフレスコ画は13世紀のもので、ローマに残る数少ない中世美術の傑作なんです。
マッテオ先生：
Ora che mi ci fai pensare. A Roma si possono trovare molte opere del periodo del Rinascimento e del barocco, mentre quelle di epoca medievale sono davvero poche.
（Now that you make me think about it. In Rome you can find many works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, while those from the medieval era are very few.）
亜希子先生：
はい。サン・シルベストロとは4世紀の教皇シルベステル１世のこと。この礼拝堂には、彼がローマの皇帝コンスタンティヌス帝の病気を治療し、洗礼を授けた様子が描かれているんです。
マッテオ先生：
Costantino e l'imperatore sotto il quale il cristianesimo fu legittimato al pari delle altre religioni. Ed è la stessa persona che per molti anni è stata confusa come modello della statua equestre di Piazza del Campidoglio, no?
（Constantine is the emperor under whom Christianity was legitimized like other religions. And he is the same person who for many years was confused as the model for the equestrian statue in Piazza del Campidoglio, right?）
亜希子先生：
そうです。コンスタンティヌス帝は、キリスト教を公認した皇帝でしたね。ちなみに彼はこの時、皇帝としての全権を教皇に渡したといわれていて、この伝説が中世の間、教皇の権威を示すための最大の武器として使われてきました。この小礼拝堂のフレスコ画にも、我こそが古代の皇帝の権威を引き継ぐ存在だという教皇の自己アピールのメッセージが込められているんです。そう思って見ると、さらにこのフレスコ画を楽しんでいただけるはずですよ。
