NHKラジオ「ニュースで学ぶ現代英語」2023年11月2日放送は、
『将棋の藤井聡太さん 史上初の八冠』でした。
将棋独特の言い回しを英語でどう表現するのか、とても参考になったので、記事にしてみました。

日本の将棋界は、新たなスーパースターの出現を目の当たりにしてきました。
▼Fujii Sota is now the first player in history to hold all eight major titles at once. And he's all of just 21 years old.
藤井聡太さんは今、将棋界で八大タイトルを独占する史上初の棋士となりました。藤井八冠は、まだ僅か２１歳です。

将棋はチェスに似た伝統的なゲームです。

（挑戦者だった）藤井七冠は王座戦において、１０歳年上でタイトル保持者の永瀬拓矢王座と対戦しました。

水曜日（１０月１１日）に京都で行われた対局は五番勝負の第４局で、
▼The players spent a long time pondering their moves. Nagase gradually got the upper hand. After they had used up their allotted time, Fujii and Nagase had just a minute to make their moves.
両者は長い時間をかけて指し手を考えました。永瀬王座が次第に優位に立つ中、双方ともが持ち時間を使い切り、互いに１手６０秒未満で指す「１分将棋」に入りました。

この時点で形勢は永瀬王座に不利になり、その後、永瀬王座が１３８手までで投了しました。
※「有利になる」なら、the tide turns in one's favorと表現できる。（解説より）
※concedeは他動詞としても使われ、その場合は「認める」という意味合いになります。例えば、concede defeatなら「敗北を認める」ですし、concede an electionなら「選挙で自分の負けを認める、相手の勝利を認める」です。（解説より）

この結果、藤井七冠は３勝１敗で王座戦を制し（八冠を達成し）ました。
放送中のトム先生の言葉も印象的でした。
