NHKラジオ「まいにちスペイン語(初級編）」2023年4月12日放送で
¡El mundo es un pañuelo!
という表現に出くわしました。「世間はなんて狭いんだ！」という意味なのだそうですが、これを英語で表現すればと考えたとき真っ先に浮かんだのが、 It's a small world!
しかし、いろいろと調べてみると、ド直球の英訳が目に入ってきました。 The world is a handkerchief！
冗談でしょ！？と思ったのですが、 このThe world is a handkerchief！ 英語ネイティブの人たちの間で普通に使われてるみたいですね。
”El Mundo es un Pañuelo.” It means “The world is a handkerchief.” This means we are all connected like a cloth. To me, it means the world is not as big as we think and we are all connected to the planet in some way.
という文章も見かけました。 いやぁ～驚きました。英語で話してるときにThe world is a handkerchief！と言って通じるか俄然試したくなりました。いや、¡El mundo es un pañuelo!と言ってみようかな？
