Perfect Combustion - The Adventure Never Ends! -

Am I a doll?

I wear same clothes with my friends. Why? We have to wear uniform in our school. There are a lot of rules in my school. I think “why are there many rules in my school? “

For example, we have to wear white sox. If girls have long hair, we must do our hair. We have to go to our classroom and sit down on our seats by 8:10. I often forget some rules, and then my teachers scold me.

I went to Australia this summer for home stay. I visited Elizabeth Macarthur High School in Camden. And I asked the students about their school regulations. And I was very surprised. (shocked)

First, they have to go to their classrooms and sit down on their seats by 8:50. And they can change seats everyday. In Japan, we have to sit down on the same seats everyday, so we always see the same view in the classroom, and it’s not interesting.

Second, they have to wear uniform but they can choose skirts or trousers. And the boys can wear trousers they like. And they can wear the sox they like too. Of course, they can wear pink sox, long sox, nylon stocking and so on.

Third, they have 2-week timetable, and they can make timetable by themselves. For example, Monday 1st period is math, and then next week, Monday 1st period is art. So, each student of the school has different timetable. They make combination of required credits.

And the last thing is the most different from ordinary Japanese school. They have various colors hair. My host friends’ hair color is dark brown, pink brown, orange brown red and blond. Five colors! Very colorful. Other students have various colors too. Normally, Japanese junior high students can’t dye their hair. So, everyone has black hairs.

Through my experience, I think Japanese respect groups, and we think little of personal dignity. In Australia people respect each personality. I wish Japan become like Australia. It has high risk. But many things can be acquired. We need to cast off ‘doll’ and develop our originality. Thank you for your listening.
