カンガルージャーキー、食べました。
We ate the kangaroo jerkey.
甘いにおい、味付け濃いめです。
The smell is sweet and the flavor is quite strong.
うーんビーフジャーキーとかわらないかな…臭みも全然なかったです。ちょっと残念。
Hmm... I'd say that it's not too different from regular beef jerky. No gamey smell or taste either...a bit underwhelming.
ちなみにオーストリアでもカンガルーといえばかわいい動物というイメージが強く、カンガルー肉をためらう傾向が強いらしいんです。国の紋章にも使われてますからね…。
BTW, the image of the kangaroo as a cute animal is apparently also strong in Australia, so many people hesitate to eat it. A kangaroo IS on their coat of arms after all...
なので2005年に、雑誌「Food Companion International」が新しいカンガルー肉の愛称募集企画を行ったそうです。
So back in 2005, Food Companion International Magazine held a contest to give an alternative name to kangaroo meat.
41か国から2700件以上の応募があったそうなのですが、3か月間の選考の結果、｢オーストラルス（australus）｣が最優秀賞に選ばれたそうです。
Over 2700 submissions from 41 countries were collected, and after 3 months of deliberation, the name "Australus" was chosen.
しかし、その名前はあまり浸透せず、今だにスーパーやレストランでは「カンガルー」のまま
However, the name was not set in any official capacity; as a result, it failed to gain wide recognition and acceptance, and supermarkets and restaurants continue to list kangaroo meat simply as "kangaroo."
小豚のベイブを連想させる豚肉を「ポーク」、バンビを連想させる鹿肉を「ヴェニソン」と呼ぶことで、豚肉や鹿肉に対する拒否反応を避けることができたように、果たして「オーストラルス」はカンガルー肉として認識される日が来るのでしょうか…。
Just like pig meat, which is reminiscent of Babe, adopted a new culinary name "pork" and Bambi-conjuring deer meat adopted "venison" to successfully suppress adverse reactions toward the meat by consumers, will "australus" ever see the day it is accepted as the name for kangaroo meat...?
