そういえば最近興味深い記事を読みました。
Btw, I recently read an interesting article.
"Japanese interpreters are struggling to translate Donald Trump"
「日本人通訳者、ドナルド・トランプの英語に苦戦」
インタビューされた通訳者のツルタ・チカコさんによると、
He rarely speaks logically, and he only emphasises one side of things as if it were the absolute truth. There are lots of moments when I suspected his assertions were factually dubious...He is so overconfident and yet so logically unconvincing that my interpreter friends and I often joke that if we translated his words as they are, we would end up making ourselves sound stupid.
トランプ氏の演説はロジカルでない事が多く、一つの見解を真実のように押し通します。彼の主張することが真実なのかどうか疑ったこともありました…自信過剰なのに論理的に説得力がないので、よく私は他の通訳者と「トランプ氏の発言を直訳したら、私たち通訳者が、バカだと思われる（頭が悪く聞こえる）」と冗談を言い合っています。
例えば2015年にサウスカロライナ州で行ったある演説で、トランプさんがオバマ政権のシリア政策について言ったこと：
For example, this quote from a 2015 rally in South Carolina in which Trump was addressing Obama's Syria policy:
I used to use the word incompetent. Now I just call them stupid. I went to an Ivy League school. I’m very highly educated. I know words, I have the best words. I have the best, but there is no better word than stupid. Right? There is none, there is none. There’s no, there’s no, there’s no word like that.
（オバマ政権を）私は以前は「無能」と言っていた。でも今は「バカ」と呼んでいる。私はアイビーリーグ大学に行った。私は高学歴だ。私は言葉を知っている。私は最も良い言葉を持っている。私は最も良いのを持っているが、「バカ」より良い言葉はない。そうだろ？ないんだ、ないんだ。ない、ない、そんな言葉はない。
と直訳できますが、こんなふうに訳してしまうと意味がわからないというか、使っている言葉や言い回しが小学生レベルなので、通訳者も困ってしまうというわけですね…。
Directly translated, that's what you get. But I doubt any Japanese person would be able to comprehend what the hell he's talking about, with language that is obviously at the level of a third-grader.
他にも存在しないワードを使ったり（「bigly」など…「greatly」の間違え）、9/11を7/11と言ってしまったり…。
He also often uses words that don't exist (like "bigly"...he meant "greatly"), and mistakenly said "7/11" instead of "9/11"...
通訳者泣かせですね
Poor translators.
ていうことは、トランプさんの発言を通訳する際に、ある程度トーンや言い回しを変えないといけないということなんですよね。
Which means that when translating what Trump says, one must change the tone and expression of his statements somewhat.
１００％正確な翻訳・通訳は不可能ですが、通訳者や翻訳者はどこまで意味や解釈を変えていいのでしょうかね…
Of course 100% accuracy when translating from one language to another is impossible, but I wonder just how much leeway translators and interpreters can have when adjusting the tone or interpretation.
