今日興味深いことがありました。
Something interesting happened today.
日本人の男友達と話してて、「顔色悪くない？」って聞かれて、
I was talking to my Japanese guy friend, and he asked me why I looked a bit under the weather.
「そうー今日生理始まったの、お腹いたいー」って答えたら、
So I replied, "Yeahhh, my period started, so my stomach hurts like hell."
すごいひかれてしまいました
He was really, really taken aback by my reply...
「『生理』ってあんま大きい声で言うなよ…知りたくないし…」と言われました。
He told me, "Don't say the word 'period' so loud...I don't even wanna know..."
がーーん
Oooops...
言ったほうが良かったのか悪かったのかは別として…
Putting aside the question of whether I should have or shouldn't have told him that information...
聞かれたから正直に答えたんだけどな…
I really only meant to respond honestly to his question...
これがきっかけで、日本語には「euphemisms（婉曲表現）」ってどういうのがあるんだろう？と考え始めました。
But this incident prompted me to think about whether euphemisms exist in the Japanese language.
Euphemismとは、英語では、物事を柔らかく、丁寧に伝える表現法です。
Euphemisms are a way to softly, indirectly, and politely express something.
例えば、誰かが亡くなったら「He died.」ではなく「He passed away.」や「He kicked the bucket.」と言ったり、
無職になった場合、「I don't have a job.」はダイレクトすぎるから、「I'm between jobs.」と言ったり。
実は、「sleep with～」も「～と性交渉をもつ」のeuphemismなんです（例： OMG, Mary slept with John last night!）。
考えてみると、英語では「生理」にも色々なeuphemismがあります。
Now that I think about it, English has a lot of euphemisms for "menstruation/period."
私的に一番よくつかわれるフレーズは「It's that time of the month（一か月に一度訪れるあの日が来た）」。

日本語ではなんていえばいいんだろう？

「今日はあの日なんだ…」って言ったら男性にも女性にも伝わるのかしら？
Will simply saying "It's THAT day today..." be enough for both men and women to understand?

Completely off topic, but I went to get a massage today, and I fell asleep halfway through and woke up to find my face bitten multiple times by a mysterious bug.
表情からお察し頂けると思いますが、monthly visitorの件とのダブルパンチだったので、かなりへこみました。
I think you can tell from my expression, but this and my monthly visitor made for a double whammy.
