After Fisherman's Wharf, we headed to Alcatraz!
フェリーでたったの10分で行けます。
It's just a 10-minute ferry ride away.

The weather is apparently usually cloudy in SF, but we lucked out this day...blue skies all day!
脱出不可能と言われた監獄島、アルカトラズ。1963年まで実際に使われていた刑務所が残っていて、今は人気観光スポットに。
Alcatraz was said to be impossible to escape from. The prisons were used until 1963 and preserved, making Alcatraz one of the most popular tourist spots in SF.
禁酒法などにより組織犯罪が激化した1920～1930年代。「社会の敵」とみなされた凶悪犯をまとめて収容する施設として、アルカトラズは犯罪者の中でも恐れられていた監獄でした。
Organizational crime increased during the Prohibition Era of the 1920s and 1930s. As the institution that imprisoned together the most notorious criminals who were deemed "enemies of the state," Alcatraz was feared, even among criminals.
「更生」ではなく、「厳罰」が凶悪犯罪率軽減への解決策だと思っていた時代ですね。徐々に「更生」に方針は移り、１９６３年にはアルカトラズも閉鎖されました。
This was an era when "punishment" was deemed to be more effective in fighting crime than "rehabilitation." However, as society gradually moved toward "rehabilitation" as the more effective means, Alcatraz was shut down in 1963.
オーディオツアー、すごく良くできてて面白かった！館内は結構複雑ですが、誘導しながらナレーションで説明してくれます。
The audio tour was really well done and interesting. The facilities are quite complex, but the audio navigates you while explaining significant places and events.

三連休前の金曜日だったんで（９月５日はレイバーデー（勤労感謝の日）！）、平日のお昼だというのにかなり混んでました
We went on the Friday before a three-day weekend (9/5 is Labor Day!), so despite going on a weekday afternoon, the tour was quite crowded.

図書館から本をかりたり、絵を描いたり、ボードゲームを遊んだり…。
Some inmates borrowed books from the library, painted, and played board games...
常にサンフランシスコが見えたため、「こんなに近くに自由があるのに、手に入れることができない」ということで、受刑者は自分の罪の重さを毎日感じさせられたとか。風が強い日には、サンフランの港で行われていたパーティーの音楽や笑い声が聞こえたらしいです。
Because SF was always visible, the inmates constantly felt the weight of their crimes, as they were reminded every day that freedom was so close yet impossible to attain. On days with strong winds, the sounds of music and laughter would drift from the ports of SF to the island.
