今どきの若い方の中には知らない方もいるかもしれません （ 私も詳しく知っているわけではありません ） が、ヘヴィー・メタル界の巨星とも言うべきロック・シンガー、Mr. Ronnie James Dio （ ロニー・ジェイムズ・ディオ ） が2010 年 05 月 16 日 午前 07 時 45 分 （ 現地時間 ） 、亡くなられたそうであります （ → BARKS ／ MTV JAPAN MUSIC NEWS ） 。
2009 年 11 月に胃がんを公表してから約半年ほどの闘病生活の後、 1942 年生まれのイタリア系アメリカ人は 67 才の早すぎる死を迎えました。
ブラック・サバス在籍時代に発表した至高の名盤ともいうべき 『 ネオンの騎士 』 から 「 Heaven & Hell 」 ・・・。

そして 「 Die Young 」 。
多くの著名人や有名人の訃報というものを目にし耳にもしているわけですが、そして、意識的には特別に自分がロニー・ジェイムズ・ディオの熱心なファンだという自覚を持ってはいなかったのですが、彼の死が何故か一番強く私の心に影響を与えているような気がします。

追悼だの哀悼だの、あるいは死後の世界の安楽だのというものは所詮は生者にとって必要なだけであって、虹を掴み、自ら虹そのものとなった者には不要なものなのでしょう。
