【創世 28：11】 　とある場所に来たとき、日が沈んだので、そこで一夜を過ごすことにした。ヤコブはその場所にあった石を一つ取って枕にして、その場所に横たわった。  

【28：12】　すると、彼は夢を見た。先端が天まで達する階段が地に向かって伸びており、しかも、神の御使いたちがそれを上ったり下ったりしていた。 

【28：13】　見よ、主が傍らに立って言われた。「わたしは、あなたの父祖アブラハムの神、イサクの神、主である。あなたが今横たわっているこの土地を、あなたとあなたの子孫に与える。

このリリクスは、イングランドの詩人で、ユニテリアンのヒムライター、Sarah Flower Adams (1805–1848)によって、1841年に書かれました。原文は英語です。

旧約聖書のアブラハムの孫でイサクの子ヤコブに関するエピソードに基づいています(創世記25章~50章)。このリリクスに最も啓示を与えたと思われる章節(創世記 28：11~22)を下記に引用しておきます。

S.アダムズが愛用していたのは英語訳聖書ですが、どの英語訳聖書なのか私は知りません。ここでは、プロテスタント各派に広く使用され、その後の英語訳聖書にも大きな影響を与え続けたキングジェイムズ　ヴァージョン/バイブル(KJV/KJB)1611年 から引用しておきます。

ヤコブは双子の兄エサウを出し抜き、父イサクを欺き、長子の権利と父の祝福を得ますが、それを恨んだ兄に命を狙われます。そこで、母の実家の叔父のもとへ逃れることになります。旅の途中、日が暮れたので、石を枕に眠ると、夢の中に神が現れ、祝福と約束を与えたという物語です。

サラは聖書全体の意味を明確に把握し、このヤコブの挿話の啓示を、祈りの言葉として信仰告白していると思います。

生きることが、どんなに悲しみと苦難と災いに満ちていても、私は、主なる神に近づくことを望み、神を称え、神を畏れ、神に従う。私の神は約束を守り、生きる時も、死せる後も、私を護り、祝福し、神の家に帰らせてくださる。

ですから、この歌は死者を送る歌ではありません。私が、今、私の神と如何に向き合うか、それを全身全霊もって告白し、神に伝える歌なのです。私の大好きな賛美歌の1つで、ほとんど毎日歌っています。

ですから、沈みゆく船の上で、この曲が流れたという意味は、死を覚悟した葬送ではなく、今も、神よ！あなたを信じます。どうか、私たちを救い、あなたの家に迎えてくださいという意味です。この曲によって、多くのクリスチャンが慰められ癒され救われたと思います。

このリリクスの最初の作曲者はサラの姉の作曲家Eliza Flowerでした。その後、何人もの方が作曲を試みているようです。

現代も歌われている曲としては、 1856年Lowell Mason作曲 "Bethany"、1861年John Bacchus Dykes作曲 "Horbury"、メソディストに好まれている1872年Arthur Sullivan作曲"Propior Deo".等があります。

ご紹介している曲は、先年の映画"タイタニック"中で演奏されていたLowell Mason作曲 "Bethany"です。

あの人は、映画"タイタニック"のヒロインとヒーローが大好きでした。苦難の人生を歩んだようですが、最後は、ご自分が愛された美しい赤い薔薇の花のように、家族に愛され、友に愛され、惜しまれながら散ってゆきました。

ヒロインの名前はローズ、ローズのように長生きできなくても、あの人も、もう少し世に留まれたらと思います。

しかし、神にとっては、生者と死者の区別はありません。私たちは死してもなお存在し、神の愛に留まり、祝福のうちにある者は、永遠の命を生きるのです。

そういえば、詩人Rainer Maria Rilkeも白血病で世を去りました。彼はカトリックでした。、病気の原因は薔薇の棘を指に刺したためと伝説は伝えています。リルケは自分の墓碑銘を作り、それは墓石に刻まれました。
