My family wasn't poor, but I didn't have an allowance system.
たた家は貧乏というわけではありませんでしたが、お小遣いというシステムがなく
The principle was that if I wanted something, I had to find a way to get it myself.

When I was in middle school, I negotiated with a newspaper delivery service to let me deliver newspapers on weekends.
中学生の時には新聞販売店に掛けあい、土日限定で配達をさせてもらいました
I delivered to about 30 houses and earned 1,000 yen.
30軒ほど配達して1,000円
Although the distances were significant since I lived in the countryside, it only took about an hour, so the hourly rate was about 1,000 yen.
田舎なので距離はありましたが、1時間くらいで終わりこれで1,000円になる
For a middle schooler, this was an incredible wage.
中学生のたたにとっては破格でした
However, trouble began in the second semester of my second year in middle school.
中学2年生の2学期
A classmate complained that it was unfair that I had money from my job and decided to start delivering newspapers on weekdays without my knowledge.
ある近所のクラスメイトがたたばかりバイトしてお金があってずるいと言い、自分も新聞配達すると平日やることになりました
After actually starting the newspaper delivery job, my classmate found it challenging to wake up early and complete the deliveries before school.
だが、実際に新聞配達をしてみると、朝は早いし、学校に行く前に終わらせなくてはいけないなど平日やるには大変だったみたいです
He irresponsibly quits after only a few days.
無責任にも数日だけやって、勝手にやめちゃったみたいです
This sudden quitting left the newspaper service in a bind, with holes in their schedule.
困ったのは新聞販売店、こんなにも早く相談なくやらなくなるとは思ってもみなかったようでスケジュールに穴が開いてしまった様子
The manager initially covered the deliveries, but soon asked me to take over.
急だったので何週間かは所長が代理で配達していたようですが、私に声がかかりました
Although I strongly declined, saying I didn't want to do it on weekdays, the persistent persuasion from the manager eventually made me give in.
断固拒否！ 平日はやりたくないとだいぶ断ったのですが 勧誘はしつこく何度も頼まれて 結局たたが折れました
I ended up earning more than 30,000 yen a month. For a middle schooler, this was a significant amount of money.
月3万円以上のお小遣い 中学生には大金です
I delivered newspapers every morning, never missed club activities, and maintained top grades, leading a very busy life.
朝は毎日新聞配達 部活は休まず頑張って 成績上位 なんかものすごく優等生っぽくない？
