Visitor numbers at Mount Fuji steadily returned to pre-pandemic levels this summer and the tourists exploring the souvenir shops and restaurants there.
Yamanashi Gov. is more concerned than happy about the return of tourists, saying the UNESCO World Heritage site is facing a “crisis.”
After the pandemic, over-tourism has become a significant issue in many tourist destinations. Cities that have sister city affiliations with Kyoto are also suffering from severe over-tourism. The local population in these cities has been relocating to other areas, leading to a decline in Venice's population. Additionally, their unique culture is gradually diminishing as it is overwhelmed by an influx of excessive visitors.
In the Fuji area, local residents have long aspired to have Mt. Fuji recognized as a World Heritage site. Their dream finally came true through the collective efforts of the community. However, if Mt. Fuji does not implement high entrance fees in the future, it could risk being removed from the World Heritage List.
