　「もしよろしければ、その組織の名前をお聞かせいただけますでしょうか」と大島さんは言う。

　"As you can see," Oshima says, "we are a very small library. And unfortunately we don't hava the space of separate toilets. Naturally it would be better to have separate facilities, but no one of our patrons has ever complained. For better or worse, our library doesn't get very crowded. If you'e like to pursue this issue of separate toilet further, I suggest you go to the Boing headquarters in Seatle and address the issue of toilets on 747s. A 747's much bigger than our kubrarym and nuch crowded, As far as I'm aware, all the tiolets on passenger aircraft are shared by men and women.

227　The next morning Oshima arrives and show me what I'm supposed to do to get the library to open. fisrt, I have to unlock and open the windows to air the room the rooms, make a quick pass with the Hoover, wipe the desktops, change the flowers in the vases, turn on the lights, occasionally sprinkle water in the haeden to keep dowm the dust and, when the time comes, open the door. At closing time it's tje same procedure in reverse-- lock the windowws, wipe the desptops gain turn off the light and close the floor door.

　Miss Saeki arrives just before eleven. Her Volkswagen Golf makes a distinctive roar as it pulles up, and I can tell right away it's her. She parks, comes in through the back door and greets the two of us. "Morning," she says. "Good morning," we answer back. That's the extent of our conversation. Miss Saeki has on a navy-blue short-sleeved dress, a cotton coat in her arms, a shoulder bag. Nothing you could call an accessory, and hardly hint of make-up. Still, there's something about her that's dazzling. She glances at me standing next to Oshima and looks for a moment as if she wants to say something, but doesn't. She merely beams a slight smile in my direction and walks up to her office on the first floor.

Both have little rucksacks on, and expressions as gloomy as a cloudy day. Neither ine says much. The act less like people using a lubrary than inspectors from the tax office checking a company inventory. Oshima and I can't work out who they are or what they could possibly be up to. He gives me a significan look and shrugs. I don't have a good feeling about this, to put it mildly.
　At noon, while Oshima goes out to the garden to eat his lunch, I take his place behing the counter.

　大島さんの計らいでカフカは図書館の部屋で寝起きするすることになる。その部屋には一枚の写真がかかっていて、 それはかつて佐伯さんは愛しあった40年前の少年でないかとカフカは想像する。
　カフカには40年という歳月が想像できないが、佐伯さんが40年前に愛した少年であるとすると、その絵の かかった部屋でカフカは生活することになるのだ。大島さんはそのことを知ったうえで、その部屋をカフカに紹介 したのだろうか？

225　Down the corridor from the reading room, past a Staff Only sign, there's a sink area where you can make coffee or tea, and there's a microwave oven, too. Just pass this is the door to the guest room, which includes a simple bathroom and wardrobe. Next to the single bed is a bedside table outfitted with a reading lamp and alarm clock. There's also a little writing desk with a lamp on it. Plus an old-fashioned set of chairs, covered in white clothm for receiving guests, amd a chest of fdawers for clothes. On a small, bachelor size fridge are some dishes and a small shelf for storing them away. If you feel like making a simple meal, the kitchen area's right outside. The bathroom has a hower, soap and shampoo, a hairdryer and towels. Everything you need for a comfortable short stay. Through a west-facing window you can see the trees in the garden. It's geting close to evening, and the sinking sun glints past the ceder ceder branches.

　"I've stayed here a couple of times when it was too much trouble to go home," Oshima says. "But nobody else uses the room. As far as I know, Miss Saeki never uses it. It's not going to put anybody out, your staying here, is what I'm trying to say."

　Oshima points to the ceiling. "You remember that room on the first floor you saw on the tour?" She's always there, writting. If I have to go out for a while she sometimes comes down and takes over at the reception desk. But unless she's got something to do on the ground floor, that's where you'll find her."
　I nod.
　"I'll ne here tommorow before ten to run through what your jon involves. Untill then just relax and take it easy."
　"Thans for everything," I tell him.
　"My pleasure," he replies.
After he leaves I unload my backpack. Arrange my meager assortment of cloths in the chest of drawers, hand up my shirt andjacket, line up ny notebook and oens on the desk, put my toiletries the the bathroom and finally stow the pack itself in the wardrobe.

　大島さんは指で天井を指さす。「館内見学のとき二階の書斎を見ただろう。そそこでいつも書きものをしている。 僕が席をはずすときには、下にきてカウンターにすわっている。でもとくに一回に用事がないときは、あそこにいる」
　僕はうなずく。
　「僕は明日の10時にここにきて、君に仕事のだいたいの段取りを教える。それまではゆっくりやすんでいるといい」
　「いちいちありがとうございます」と僕は言う。

227　The room doesn't have any decorations at all, except for a small oil painting, a realistic portrait of a young boy by the shore. Not bad, I decide--maybe done by somebody famous? The boy looks about twelve or so, and he's wearing a white sunhat and sitting on a small deckchair. His elbow's on one of the arms of the chair, his chin resting in his hand. He looks a little sad, but kind of pleased, too. A black German shepard sits next to the boy, as though he's guarding him. In the background is the sea, and a couple of other people, but they're too far away to make out their faces. A small island's visible, and a few fist-shaped clouds float over the water. Most definitely a summer scene. I sit at the desk and gaze at the painting for a while. I begin to feel as though I can hear the crash of waves, smell the saltiness of the sea.

　部屋の中には装飾的なものはなにもないが、壁に一枚だけ小さな油絵がかかっている。海辺 にいる少年の写実的な絵だった。悪くない絵だ。名前のある画家が描いたのかもしれない。少年 はたぶん１２歳くらい。白い日よけ帽をかぶる、小ぶりなデッキチェアに座っている。手すり に肘をつき、頬杖をついている。いくぶんあ憂鬱そうな、いくぶん得意そうな表情を顔に浮かべて いる。黒いドイツ・シェパードが少年を護るような恰好でそのとなりに腰をおろしている。 背景には海が見える。何人かの人々も描きこまれているが、とても小さくて顔までは見えない。 沖には小さな島が見える。海の上には握りこぶしのようなかたしをした雲がいくつか浮かんで いる。夏の風景だ。僕は机の前に座って、しばらくその絵を眺める。見ていると、実際に波の 音が聞こえ、潮の匂いがかぎとれそうな気がしてくる。

　ナカタさんは、交番を去るときに、明日の夕方、空から魚が降ってくると予言する。
　担当の警官はふたたび、この予言を無視する。
　
　
218　The policeman was nearing the end of his shift and waanted to finish up all his paperwork before he went off-duty. He's promised to meet a ffellow officer for a drink at a nearby bar when he got off, so the last thing he wanted to do was waste time talking to some crazy old coot.
　But Nakata gave him a harsh look and shook his head. "No, sir, Nakata wants to tell everything while he still remembers it. If I wait until tomorrow I might forget something important. Nakata was in the emply plot of land in the 2-chome section. The Koizumi had asked me to find their missing cat, Goma. Then a huge black dog appeared out of the blue and took me to a house. A gig house with with a gig gate and a black car. I don't remember the adress. I've never been to that part of the town before. But I'm pretty sure it's in Nakano Ward. Inside the house was a man named Johny Walker who had on a funny black hat. A very high sort of hat. In the fridge in the kutchin there were rows of cats' heads. About 20 or so, I'd say. He He collects cats, cut their heads with a saw and eats their heart. He's collects ing cats' couls to make a special kind of flute. And then he's going to use that flute to collect people's souls. Right in front of Nakata, Johnie Walker killed Mr Kawamura with a knife, And several other cats. He cut open their stomaches with a knife. He was going to kill Goma and mimi, too. But then Nakata used a knife to kill Johnie Walker.

352　勤務交代の時刻が近づいていたし、開館はその前に書類をかたづてしまいたかった。勤務があけたら同僚と 一緒に近くの酒場に飲みに行く約束になっていた。頭のおかしい老人を相手にしている暇はない。
　しかしナカタさんは厳しい目をして首を横に振った。「いいえ、お巡りさん、ナカタは思い出せるうちにいっさいを お話ししておきたく思います。明日になれば大切なことを忘れてしまっているかもしれません。」
　ナカタは二丁目の空地におりました。コイズミさんに頼まれまして、そこで猫のゴマちゃんを探していたのです。 そこに大きな犬がとつぜんやってきて、ナカタをあるお宅に連れて行きました。大きな自動車のある大きなお宅でした。 住所はわかりません。あたりに見覚えもありません。でもたぶん中野区だと思います。そこにジョニー・ウォーカさん という不思議な黒い帽子をかぶった人がいました、丈の高い帽子です。台所の冷蔵庫の中には、猫さんのあたまが たくさん並んでいました。２０個くらいはあったと思います。その人は猫さんを集めて、鋸で首を切り、心臓を食べます。 猫さんの魂をつかって特別の笛をつくるのです。その笛を使って、今度は人の魂を集めるのであります。ジョニー・ウォーカー さんはナカタの前で、ナイフでカワムラさんを殺しました。ほかに何びきかの猫さんたちも殺しました。ナイフでお腹を割きます。 ゴマちゃんとミミさんも殺そうとしました。そこでナカタはナイフを持って、ジョニー・ウォーカーさんをころしたのであります。
　
219　Johnie Waler said he wanted Nakata kill him. But I didn't mean to kill him. I've never killed anybody before. I just want to to stop Johnie Walker from killing any more cats. But my body woukdn't listen. It did what I wanted. I picked up one of the knoves there and stabbed Johnie Walker two times. Johnie Walker fell down, covered with blood, and died. Nakata got all boody then, too. I sat on the sofa and must have fallen asleep. When I woke up up it was the middle of the nigh and I was back in the empty plot of land. Mimi and Goma were beside me. That was just a white ago. Nakata took Goma back, got some grilled aubergine and vinegered cucumbers from Mrs Koizumi, and came directly here. And I thought I'd better report to the Governor right away, Tell him what happened.

219　Nakata sat up straight through this whole recitation, and when he'd finished he took a deep breath. He'd never spoken this much in one spurt in his life. He felt drained, "So please report this to the Governor," he added.
　The young policement nad listened to the whole story with a vacant look, and didn't understand much of what the old man was getting at. Goma? Jphnnie Wakler? "I understand," he replied. "I'll make sure the Governor hears of this."
　"I hope he doen't cut my sub city."
　Looking displeased, the policemen pretended to fill out a form. "I understand I'll write it down just like that: The poerson in question dos^sired that his subsidey will not be cut off. Is taht. all right, then?"
　"Yest, that's fine. Much oblighed. Sorry to take up your time. And please say hello to Governor for me."
　"Will do. So don't warry, and just take it easy today, OK?" the policeman said Hc ouldn't help adding a psesonal aside: "you know, your clothes look prettu clean for having killed someone and got all bo\loody. There's not a spot on you."
　"Yes, you're entirely correct. To tell the truth, Nakata dinds it very strange too. It doesn't make any disapprered. It's very strange.

　若い配管は茫然とした顔でナカタさんの話を聞いていた。しかしナカタさんがなにを言っているのかが、実のところ ほとんど理解できなかった。ジョニー・ウォーカー？　ゴマちゃん？
　「ホジョが打ち切らないといいのですが」
　警官はむずかしい顔をして、用紙にメモをするふりをした。「わかりました」。そのことはそうかいておきましょう。 当人は、補助が打ち切らないことをきぼうしている、と。これでいいですね？」
　「けっこうです。おまわりさん、ありがとうございます。俺間を取らせましした。知事さんによろしくお伝えください」
　「つたえておきます。だから安心して、今夜はゆっくりお休み」、と開館はそういってから。最後にひとつだけ 感想を付け加えた。「ところであんた、人を殺して血まみれになったというわりには、服には何にもついていないですね」
　「はい、そのとおりであります。実を申しまして、それがナカタも不思議でならないのです。腑に落ちません。 たしかにナカタは血まみれになっっていたはずなのですが、気が付いた時にはそれは亡くなっていました。不思議です」
　
　 　Nakata slid open the door and was about to leave when he stopped and turned round. "Excuse me, sir, but will you be in this area, tomorrow evening?"
　"Yes, I will," the policeman replied cauciously. "I'm on duty here tomorrow evening. Why do you ask?"
　"Even if it's sunny, I suggest you bring an umbrella."
　The policeman nodded. He turned and looked at the clock. His colleague should be phoning anytime now. "OK, I'll be sure to bring one."
　"There will be fish falling from the sky, like rain. A lot of fish. Mostly sardines, I believe. With a few mackerel mixed in."
　"Sardines and mackerel, eh?" the policeman laughed. "Better turn the umbrella upside down, then, and catch a few. With vinegar it would make a meal."
　"Vinegard mackerel's one of Nakata's favourites," Nakata said with a serious look. "But by that time tomorrow I believe I'll be gone."

　ナカタさんは引き戸を開けて交番を出ようとしたが、足を停めて振り返って言った。「ところ で明日の夕方は、お巡りさんはこのへんにおられますか？」
　「いるよ」と警官は用心深い声で言った。「明日の夕方もここで勤務している。それがなにか ？」
　「もし空が晴れておりましても、念のために傘をお持ちになった方がいいです」
　警官はうなずいた。そして振り返って壁の時計を見た。そろそろ同僚から誘いの電話がかか ってくるはずだ。「わかりました。傘を持っていくようにします」
　「空から雨が降るみたいに魚が降ってきます。たくさんの魚です。たぶんイワシだと思い ます。中にはアジも混ざっているかもしれません」
　「イワシとアジか」と警官は笑って言った。だとしたら、むしろ傘を逆さにして魚を受けて、 酢の物にするといいかもしれないね」
　「アジの酢の物はナカタも好物であります」とナカタさんはまじめな顔で言った。
　「でもナカタは明日のその時刻には、たぶんもうここにはおりません」
　

　The next day when--sure enough--sardines and mackerels rained down on a section of Nakano Ward, the young policeman turned white as a sheet. With no warning whatsoever some two thousand sardines and mackerels plunged to earth from the clouds.

【あらすじ】

　その後、交番に「人を刺しました」と報告する。警官は、自分の名前も書けないナカノさん を信じない。調書もとらずに追い返す。あとで大騒ぎとなる。

216　The Koizumis were overjoyed at Goma's return. It was past 10 p.m. but the children were still up, brushing their teeth before bed. Their parents were drinking tea and watching the TV news, and they welcomed Nakata warmly. The two little girls, in pyjamas, jostled each other to be the first to hug their precious pet. Then they gave Goma some milk and cat food, which she eagerly tucked into.

　 Mrs Koizumi went to another room and t\returned with Nakata's fee in the envilope, which her husband handed to Nakata. "It's not much, but please accept this token for all you've done. We're very greatful."
　 "Thank you vrey much. Much obliged," Nakata said and bowed.
　"I'm surprised, though, you could find her in the darkness like this."
　"Yes, it's a long story. Nakata can't tell you it all. I'm not too bright, and not so good at giving long explanations."
　"That's quite all right. We are so grateful to you, Mr Nakata." Mrs Koizumisaid, "I'm sorry it's just leftovers, but we have some grilled aubergine and vinegared cucumbers we'd like you to take home with you."
　"I'd be happy to. Grilled aubergine and vinegard cucumbers are some of Nakata's favourites."

　「ありがとうございます、遠慮なくいただきます」ナカタさんは封筒を受け取り、頭を下げた。
　「しかしこんなに暗くなってからよく居場所がわかりましたね」
　「はい、話せば長い話になりませう。ナカタはとてもお話しできそうにありません。ナカタは頭があまりよくないし、 長い話をするのがとりわけ苦手なのです」
　「いいんですよ、そんなこと。ほんとうになんとお礼申し上げていいのか」と奥さんが言った。
　「そうだ、夕食ご飯の残り物で申し訳ないんですけと、焼きなすとキューリの酢の物がある んですげど、ナカタさん、よかったらお持ちになりませんか？」
　「そうですか、お言葉に甘えて、いただいて参ります。焼きなすもキュウリの酢の物も、 ナカタの大好物であります」
217　Nakata stowed the Tupperware container and the envelope in his bag. He walked quickly towards the station and went to a police box near the shopping district. A young officer was seated at a desk inside, working intently on some papers. His hat was on the desk.
　Nakata slid open the glass door. "Good evening. Sorry to bother you," he said.
　"Good evening," the policeman replied. He looked up from the paperwork and gave Nakata a once-over. Basically a nice, harmless old man, was his professional assessment, most likely stopping to ask direction.

　ナカタさんは交番のガラスの引き戸を開けて中に入り、「こんばんは。失礼します」と言っ た。
　「こんばんは」と警官も言った。彼は書類から目を上げ、ナカタさんの風体（ふうてい） を観察した。害のないおとなしそうな老人に見えた。たぶん道でも聞きにきたのだろうと 警官は思った。
　
217　Standing at the endrance, Nakata removed his hat and stuffed it in his pocket, then took a handkerchief from the other pocket and blew his nose. He fold up the handkerchief and out it back.
　"Is there something I can do for you? " the policeman said.
　"Yes, there is, I just murdered somebody."
　The policeman dropped his pen on the desk and stared open-mouthed at the old man. For the moment he was speechless. "What the --? Here, why don't you sid down," he said dubiously, pointing to the chair opposite him. He reached out and checked that he had his poistol, baton and handcuffs on him.
　"Thank you, Nakata said, and sat down. Back held straight, hands resting on his lap, he looled straight at the officer.

　"So what you're saying is ... you killed somebody?"
218　Yes, Nakata killed a person with a knife. Just a little while ago," Nakata admitted frankly.
　The young officer took out a form, glanced at the clock on the wall and noted down the time and the statement about knifing. "I'll need your name and address."
　"My name is Satoru Nakata, and my address is --"
　"Just a moment. What characters do you write your name with?"
　"I don't know about characters. I'm sorry, but I can't write. Or, read, either"

　「はい、ナカタは先ほど人を殺しました」
　警官は持っていたボールペンを思わず机の上に落とし、口を開けてナカタさんの顔を見つめた。彼はしばらくのあいだ ことばをうしなっていた。
　「」ちょっと、まあ、そこに座って」と警官は半信半疑で、机の向かい側にある椅子を指さした。それから 手をのばして、拳銃と警棒と手錠を腰に帯びていることをいちおう確認した。
　「はい」といってナカタさんはそこに腰を下ろした。背筋を伸ばし、両手を膝の上に置き、警官の顔をまっすぐに 見た。
　「それであんたは・・・人を殺した」
　「はい、ナカタはナイフで人を刺し殺しました。ついさっきのことであります」、ナカタ さんはそうきっぱりと言った。
　警官は用紙をとりだし、掛け時計に目をやり、ボールペンで現在時刻を記入し、ナイフで 刺殺と書いた。「まずあんたの名前と住所だ」
　「はい、ナカタサトルといいます。住所は―」
　「ちょっと待って。ナカタサトル、どんな字を書くの？」
　「ナカタは字のことはわかりません。申し訳ありませんが、字が書けないのです。読むこともできません」
　
218　The officer frowned. "You're telling me you can't read at all? You can't even write your name?"
　"That's correct. Until I was nine I could read and write, but then there was an accedent and after that I can't. Nakata's not too bright."
　The officer sighed and laid down his pen. "I can't fill out the form if I don't know how your name is written.
　"I appologise."
　"Do you have any family?"
　"Nakata's all alone. I have no family. And no job, I live on a sub city from the Governor."
　"It's pretty late, and I suggest you go on home. Go home and a get a good sleep, and then tommorow if you remember somrthing come and see me again. We can talk then."
　
351　警官は顔をしかめた。
　「まったく読み書きができない。自分の名前もかけないの？」
　「はい、９歳の時まではナカタもちゃんと読み書きできたということですが、自己に会いまして、 それ以来すっかりできなくなりました。頭もよくありません」
　警官はため息をついて、ボールぺんを下に置いた。「それじゃ書類も書けないよ。自分の 名前の字もわからないようじゃ」
　「申し訳ありません」
　「だれかおうちにの人はいないの？　家族は」
　「ナカタは独りです。家族はおりません。仕事もしておりません。知事さんからホジョ をいただいて成果鵜をしております」
　「もう、夜も遅いし、あんたそろそろ家に戻った方がいいよ。そしｈてぐっすり寝なさい。 それで明日になってまた、何か思い出したら、もう一度ここに来なさい。そのときにあらためて 話を聞こう」
