Charlie といえば、まず思い浮かぶのは人名としての “チャーリー” だろう。
Charlie Chaplin、Charlie Parker……、架空の人名でも、Charlie’s Angels、Charlie Brown、Charlie Chan、ロアルド・ダールの『チョコレート工場の秘密』（Charlie and the Chocolate Factory）の主人公も Charlie だった。そして……

ここでの Charlie は、もちろん、ダニエル・キイスの名作『アルジャーノンに花束を』（Flowers For Algernon）の主人公である。ただし、ラルフ・ネルソン監督がこの小説を映画化した「まごころを君に」（主演のクリフ・ロバートソンはアカデミー主演男優賞を獲得）の原題は Charly となっているので要注意！

ところが、いろいろな映画、特に戦争映画を字幕版で観ていくうちに、私の頭は混乱してしまった。やたらと “チャーリー” らしき英語が聞こえてくるのだけれど、トロい私にも、どうやら具体的な個々の人名ではなさそうな気がしてきたのだ。
今となっては笑い話だけれど、戦場や航空機などでの無線連絡時に、情報を正確・確実に伝達するために用いられる、Alfa、Bravo、Charlie といった通信コード（communications code word）としての Charlie と、ベトナム戦争における「南ベトナム解放戦線」の蔑称「ベトコン（Viet Cong）」を指す俗語としての Charlie が、私の頭のなかでゴチャゴチャになっていたのだ。（^^；

先日買ってきたジェームズ・ボールドウィンの1964年の戯曲、Blues for Mister Charlie のページをパラパラめくっていくうちに以下の一節が目に留まった。MERIDIAN は黒人牧師で息子が白人に殺害されている。PARNELL は地方新聞の編集長という役どころだ。

PARNELL: Who's Mister Charlie?
MERIDIAN: You're Mister Charlie. All white men are Mister Charlie!
英和辞典、英英辞典で Charlie を引くと、「コカイン」などを含めていろいろな語義が列挙されているけれど、今回「白人」という意味もあることを知った。Mister Charlie は黒人のあいだで用いられていた表現らしい。
