という見出しが飾り、その記事は以下のパラグラフで始まっていた。

もちろん、事の顛末について正反対のバージョンが用意されていたということころがポイントで、この後は、

と続くのだ。

だが、私の関心は、“The Day the Earth Caught Fire” に向かった。マニアではないが、ＳＦ映画はそこそこ好きなので、それなりに観てきたつもりだったのだが、このタイトルには覚えがなかったからだ。

で、その映画の存在は確認することができた。いちおうアメリカ映画となっているようだが、キャストなどから推測すると、実質的にはイギリス映画といっていいのかもしれない。時期的には、「光る眼」、「続･光る眼」が作られたあたりに近いので、アメリカ資本がイギリスで低予算で製作していた映画のひとつだったのかもしれない。

私の不勉強には違いないだろうが、日本でこの映画が話題になったことはあまりなかったような気がするので、いちおう探してみると、なんと、あった。
