先日、南アフリカの Daily Friend 紙の Opinion欄に ジョン・ケーン・バーマン氏の
Time to heed the advice of Rudyard Kipling
ラドヤード・キプリングの忠告に耳を傾ける時
という記事がのりました。
少し、気になって目を通したところ、最近の行き過ぎた奴隷貿易に加担した人々の銅像を打ち壊す行為に警告を促す記事でした。

注目したのは、その警告が、キプリングの詩 IF に耳を傾けてみようというものだったことです。何故なら、キプリングはかつての英国帝国主義を賛美する象徴のように思われているからです。
それで、キプリングの詩に何が書かれているのか、探ってみようと思いました。

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

もし君が夢を見ることが出来て、その夢に支配されないなら
もし君が考えることが出来て、その考えを君の目的にしないなら
もし君が勝利の神と敗北の神の両方に出会い
これら二つの虚像を同じに扱うなら
もし君が真実を話したのに、それが悪党らによって捻じ曲げられ
愚か者が罠にかかってしまったとしたら
もし君が人生を捧げた物が壊されるのを見て
身を屈めてそれらを使い古した道具で作り上げることが出来るなら
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your biginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

もし君が君の勝利の全てを一纏めにして
それを一度のコイントスに賭け、そして負け
再び最初からやり直すことが出来るなら
そして決してその負けについて一言も不満を言わず
もし君が心臓や神経や筋肉が衰えた後で
それらを思いっきり回復することが出来るなら
そして君の中に「がんばれ」という気力以外
何も残っていない時に、がんばれるのなら
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

もし君が群集と話が出来、美徳を保てるなら
また、王様らと歩いて、庶民の心を無くさないなら
君の敵と愛する友の両方共が君を傷つけないなら
もし全ての人が君を信頼し、信頼し過ぎることが無ければ
もし君が決められた一分の時を長距離競争の60秒の価値で
置き換えることが出来るなら
世界は君のものであり、全てはその中にある
そして、更に君は、一人の立派な人間となるだろう、息子よ
