前々回で紹介した、ダウランドの曲に関連した ソネット ８ を見てみたいと思います。

Music to hear, why hear'st thou music sadly ?
Sweets with sweet war not, joy delights in joy;
Why lov'st thou that which thou receiv'st not gladly,
Or else receiv'st with pleasure thine annoy ?
If the true concord of well-tuned sounds
By unions married, do offend thine ear,
They do but sweetly chide thee, who confounds
In singleness the parts that thou shouldst bear:
Mark how one string, sweet husband to another,
Strikes each in each by mutual ordering,
Resembling sire, and child, and happy mother,
Who all in one , one pleasing note to sing:
Whose speechless song being many, seeming one,

音楽を聴く若者よ、なぜ君は音楽を悲しく聴くのだ
美しさは美しさと争わず、喜びは喜びの中で楽しむもの
なぜ君は自分が喜びを受け入れないものを愛するのか

心の内に音楽を愛さない人
或いは、美しい調べに心動かされない人は
反逆や策略や略奪こそ相応しい
彼の心の動きは夜のように鈍く
彼の愛情はエレボス（暗黒界）のように暗い
そんな人間は信用してはいけないよ
