この歌は一般には シューベルト の アベマリア としての方が有名です。
ウォルタースコット の 湖の麗人 という物語詩の中の 聖母讃歌 をシューベルトが作曲したものですが、今日では湖の麗人の話は忘れられ、アベマリア（ドイツ語の詩）の単独の歌として讃美歌等にも取り上げられ一般に流布しています。
ここでは、ウォルタースコットを偲び、その元の英語の詩を取り上げてみたいと思います。
