この曲は1843年にイギリスの作曲家マイケル・ウィリアム・バルフによって作曲されたオペラ ボヘミアンガール の中で、主人公である少女アイリーンが恋する人を夢見て歌う歌です。作詞は当時劇場の支配人でもあったアルフレッド・バンです。
この歌は19世紀にはかなり知られ歌われました。またその後ジェイムスジョイスの小説の中にも登場したり、色々なところでパロディーとして引用されていますが、現在は少し忘れられているようなので、取り上げてみました。
