Like a child eagerly trying to win some trading cards during a playground huddle, I scrunch up my fingers behind my back before unleashing my hand in time-honored fashion with the Japanese phrase: "Saisho wa gu, janken ... pon!"

昔からあるやり方で、「じゃんけんぽん」と言いながら手の平を解き放つ前に、指を背中の後ろで,

何かをscrunchすると、それをギュッと絞ったり、それを曲げたりして、それはその本来の自然な形ではなく、よく、押しつぶされてしまうことがある。
例＞彼女の父親は、鼻にしわを寄せた。
彼女のお母さんは、背筋をピンと伸ばして座って、彼女の綿の手袋をぐしゃっとボールのように丸めた。
schrunch up は、scrunch と同じ意味。
例＞彼女は、メモ書きの３ページ分をぎゅっとと押し曲げて、ゴミ箱に捨てた。
私は、帽子をくしゃっと丸めてポケットに入れた。
原形をとどめないくらい、ぎゅっと何かを押し曲げることをscrunchと言うようですね。
じゃんけんは、まず、手をぎゅっと指を押し曲げて、それを背中の後ろへ持って行き、「じゃんけんぽん」と言いながら、その手を解き放つ、 と説明していました。
なるほど～。
