であったのに対し、

・おめでとう
・祈りの言葉
と、自分の感想を書かないパターンが圧倒的でした。
また、婚約祝いのメッセージが
婚約している片方だけに宛てられていることが多いのに対し、
ほとんどの結婚祝いのメッセージは
結婚する二人に宛てたものであることが
特徴的でした。
早速具体例をみていきましょう！
①おめでとう
できるだけ二人の名前を書いて
「おめでとう！」と書き出しましょう。

②祈りの言葉
Wish や May を使って
「～しますように」と二人の幸せを祈りましょう。
婚約祝いと同じメッセージが使えることも多いですが
「Engagement」（婚約）の部分は
「Marriage」（結婚）にします。
一方「Wedding」は「結婚式」の意味ですので
「結婚式」について言及するとき以外には
使わないよう気をつけなければなりません。
また、出だしで二人に宛てた場合には
ここで「you two」「you both」「the two of you」
なども使えます。

Wishing you two an abundance of love and happiness.
Wishing you both all the simple joys that make spending a lifetime together
simply beautiful.
Wishing the two of you one happy life together.

Offering advice or ? “I don’t think…”
In a Western business environment, being able to give your opinion freely and with confidence is very important. People who are comfortable expressing themselves tend to be respected within the company and tend to be listened to more than those who are too shy or nervous to speak their mind. But sometimes simply giving your opinion isn’t enough. Whether you are listened to or not depends a lot on HOW your opinion is given. Using correct grammar when telling someone what you think is often just as important as what you think. Although it may not be fair, people tend to take someone’s opinion more seriously if their English is as close to perfect as possible. So the need to be grammatically correct is an important one.
Recently, I have noticed some of our students having trouble with the grammar in Lesson 7, page 70, exercise 1. The exercise asks students to give their opinion about solutions to 8 problems, using the pattern “I think we should…” or “I don’t think we should…” Most of you have been doing great with the first pattern, having no trouble using, “I think we should…” Keep up the great work!
However, when using the second pattern some students have been making a small, but important mistake. Instead of saying, “I DON’T think we should…” they say, “I think we SHOULDN’T…” Here’s an INCORRECT example from the text:
A: One of your suppliers often sends you invoices with several mistakes on them.
B: I think we shouldn’t use that supplier anymore.
Now, in Japanese it is more common to follow a negative phrase with “I think,” so it may feel more natural to say “I think we shouldn’t…” But in English, we always use “I don’t think we should…” Here’s a CORRECT example:
A: I propose that we cut staff pay by 10% across the board in order to save money.
B: I don’t think we should do that because it will negatively impact staff morale. I think we should offer early retirement instead.
To sum up, when giving a negative opinion, make sure to always use “I don’t think…,” Your coworkers will easily understand you and you can worry less about your grammar and more about convincing them you’re right!

Getting Results - Business Results Elementary Lesson 1
A look at the language from Business Results Elementary Lesson 1 “Jobs”
The election is over. Last week I was handed a flyer for my local incumbent candidate as she quickly told me her name. I am sure that had she had more time I would have gotten a more detailed introduction.
After I walked away, reading the flyer it occurred to me that this is very much connected to the Activity for Lesson 1 in the Elementary text from our new Business Result series. The lesson talks about introductions and some of the basic information that we include; name, title, company, and where we are from.
While on the campaign trail politicians need to make a lasting impression in a very short time because on voting day they need you to remember their name when you fill out the ballot. This is especially true of the swing voters; those who haven’t decided who they prefer. These swing voters have been known to choose a candidate based on name recognition alone; rather than the policies of individual candidates.
When you go to a conference or trade show this same principle comes into play. You have very little time with the potential client but need to be remembered. I think it is safe to say that all things being equal we will choose to work with the person or company that we remember or that we felt a connection with. If you have to choose between two companies and you remember that the salesperson you met grew up in your hometown you will probably give them a chance first. Knowing this, I think we would all agree that we need a solid introduction.
So what makes a good basic introduction and why is it critical? One key point is that often in western business situations we exchange business cards at the end of the conversation, or even not at all. That is a huge difference from the Japanese business culture. If you are not going to see the other person’s card until the end, and nor will they see yours you need to introduce that information verbally. I often think of my introduction as a verbal business card and make sure that I verbalize the key information from the card when meeting someone for the first time.
“Good afternoon, my name is Jonathan Allen and I am the Quality Manager from PEGL at Business Breakthrough. I work in Japan but I am originally from Canada.”
So I included my name, job title and company as well as my home country and the country that I currently reside in. This is a very simple introduction. It is from this basic form that I build a more elaborate or detailed introduction to meet different situations. If I am in Canada for example I usually get more detailed and replace country with my home province or really specific and mention my hometown. If I was from a larger city I may mention it before the province. “I’m from Toronto.” (city) rather than “I’m from Ontario.”(province)
So how do you introduce yourself in English? What do you want to say to a new client or contact? Can you make it effective and also keep it short and sweet? Remember you want to keep some information out so that you can use it for small talk later; you want them to remember you but they don’t need you to recite your entire resume. That will come over time as you build your business relationship.
The language for discussing your job, country and nationality is covered in Business Results Elementary Lesson 1. The lesson touches on the American social-networking company Facebook.

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?
If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.
PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick' ?
You lovers of the English language might enjoy this.
There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP.'
It's easy to understand UP , meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report ?
We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.
And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.
We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!
To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP; you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP . When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP .
When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP .
When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP .
One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP , for now my time is UP , so... it is time to shut UP !
Oh . . . one more thing:

日本人の同僚向けのカードや色紙を書く時と同じで
ついつい既に書いてある
他の人のメッセージを先に読んでしまい
誰かと重ならないメッセージを考えるのに
少し時間がかかってしまいました。
結局書いたメッセージはこれ↓
Many congrats on your engagement!
May you two love birds have a very happy life together.
そこで、こういう時のために
気の利いた定型メッセージ文をストックしておくといいなと思い
英文グリーティングカードなどから
表現を少し集めてきました。
そして、それらを分類してみたら
どんな構成でどんな事を書くのが”定型”なのか
少し見えて来ましたので、今日はそれをシェアします！
【婚約祝メッセージの書き方】
概ね以下①～③の流れになるのがスタンダードのようです。
（スペースの都合によっては②は省略可）
①お祝い or 婚約という事実の認知
「おめでとう」「婚約したんですね！」に当たる書き出し部分です。
＜お祝いの例文＞
Congratulations on your engagement!
Congrats on your engagement!
Happy Engagement!
Best Wishes on your engagement!
＜事実認知の例文＞
You got engaged!
You're engaged!
②婚約を知ったあなたの感想
基本的には「嬉しいです」という気持ちを示す部分ですが、
当事者二人をよく知っている場合には
「こうなると思ってたよ」などと書いてもＯＫです。
＜感想の例文＞
I am so happy for you!
I always knew there was a hint of forever about you two.
③祈りの言葉
③－１ 祈りの言葉の前置き
「～しますように」という祈りの言葉の前に
「～のこの時」と前置きを入れることもよくあります。
＜前置きの例文＞
As you enter the next chapter of your lives...
As you enter your lives together...
As you enter this new journey togther...
As you enter into a lifetime of togetherness...
As you enter this commitment to each other...
③－２ 祈りの言葉
「～しますように」と二人の幸せを祈ります。
大きくは「may」タイプと「wish」タイプに分かれます。
＜祈りの言葉の例文＞「may」タイプ
May you build a lifetime of happiness.
May you share all the joys of a lifetime of love.
May you always find happiness in one another and in the wonderful love that you share.
May you be showered with the blessing of Cupid.
May this be the beautiful beginning of a happily-ever-after.
May happiness and joy always be yours.
＜祈りの言葉の例文＞「wish」タイプ
Wishing you a lifetime of love and happiness.
Wishing you all the joys of togetherness.
I wish for your all happiness that life can bring.
Here's wisnihg your lots of wonderful moments of togetherness.. now and always!

＜格言／アドバイスの例文＞
"This is special time -- a time of new joys and new beginnings.
Keep these feelings in your heart always, and your marriage will be as wonderful as your love is now."
"Of all life's many treasures, the most beautiful is love."
キーとなる単語は
幸福・喜びを意味する happy/happiness/joy
人生を意味する life/lifetime
愛情や絆を意味する love/together/togetherness
などが浮かび上がってきますので、
「happy life together」と３拍子そろって
①→③の流れをとった私のメッセージは
スタンダードの類に入りそうです（笑）
