その記事と一緒にNewsweek日本版8月5日号に紹介されていた

例えば、Level 1-2. "Share"という単語は
"tell to others"という語句に相当しますが
「tellには一方通行な上に、優位に立っている印象を与えたり、
失礼な感じに響くことさえあります。」(P.4)
と、ドクター・ヴァンスは説明しています。
それではshareのイメージはというと
「共有するという基本的意味の上に成り立っていますから、
個の単語を使うと、自分の持っている物を他人に使ってもらい、
それから利益を得てもらおうという民主的なイメージを

納得ですね！！

How do you spend your free time?
Business Results Intermediate Unit 3
I am sure that you are all very used to being asked about your free time or your hobbies when you meet a foreign person, whether they are a colleague, a friend or perhaps an Instructor. The reason for this is that we like to know our co-workers beyond the office. It helps us to build a better relationship if we know what our colleagues are into. If we happen to be interested in the same thing or find ourselves in a similar situation; we both have kids for example.
In the case of Instructors we like to know what you like to do because it allows us to tailor our lessons to be of interest to you. If you need to work on numbers in English and we know you're a baseball fan it should be more enjoyable to talk about Ichiro’s MLB record 9 consecutive 200 hit seasons (congratulations!) than to discuss interest rates for example.
So what do you do with your free time? According to the Japan Times article the question that I should ask is “do you have any free time?” The article states that Japanese workers use less than half of their annual vacation days. Add that to the fact that people work very long days and you quickly see why the answer you get to “What are your hobbies?” is “I like to sleep.” I like to sleep too but it is not a hobby, it is a necessity!
I have long felt that increased time off through normal working days and increased vacation time would not only help the employee but also help the company and the economy as a whole. How is that possible? Certainly more work being done is the solution to a stalled economy, right? Actually I think it would be better if people here spent a little more time at leisure. Why? Because spending time on leisure activities also leads to spending money. I know that when I work all day I only spend money on lunch. When I take a day off I spend a lot more money. My wife will tell you that my hobbies are our biggest household expense. I play golf and inline hockey (hockey on rollerblades) and when I factor in shopping, gas, restaurants and snacks for the family we spend a great deal of our budget when I am off.
What are the benefits for me? More exercise, better health, more energy and most importantly I remember why I work so much, to provide for my family and to finance my life. That is all the motivation that I need. I work to live rather than live to work.
What are the benefits for my company? Well my increased energy leads me to be more productive. I have personal deadlines everyday; I need all this done by 6pm so that I can go home. I also think that my free time allows me to see what is happening in the city and helps me grow as a Manager (I better understand the employees) and as an Instructor because I am aware of what is happening in the real world.
What about the benefits for the economy? According the article the 2002 report by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry estimated that 1.5 million jobs would be created and 11.8 trillion yen would be pumped into the economy simply as a result of everyone taking their holidays.
So what do you think? Is more time off the answer? This month will be a good test as the upcoming “Silver week” holiday should bring a spike in spending here in Japan. That should show just what can be achieved by encouraging your team to use all of their allotted vacation time.
Maybe work life balance will lead to a better balance sheet for the country as a whole.

少し前にこんなニュースがCNNに出ていました。
Lawsuit targets 'rip-off' of 'Catcher in the Rye'
「ライ麦畑でつかまえて」のパロディー版、訴えられる

記事によると、
TIME誌で「２０世紀の１００冊」にも選ばれた
サリンジャーの傑作「Catcher in the Rye」（邦題：ライ麦畑でつかまえて）
のパロディー版がスウェーデンの出版社から出版され、
著者であるサリンジャーが
そのパロディー版のアメリカ国内での出版・販売・広告を
一切行わないよう裁判で求めた、ということです。
「ライ麦畑でつかまえて」では
寄宿学校から追い出された主人公１６歳の少年ホールデンが
ニューヨークの街を徘徊しますが、
パロディー版「60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye」では
６０年後、７６歳になったホールデンが老人ホームを抜け出して
またニューヨークの街を徘徊する、というストーリーらしいです。
サリンジャー（９０歳）は１９６５年以降一切本を出版せず、
半世紀近くも世間から離れて
”世捨て人”生活を送っていることで知られており、
一方１９４５年に彼の短編作品が映画化された以外は
これまでに一度も自分の作品の利用を認めず、
スティーブン・スピルバーグ監督から
「ライ麦」の映画化の話が持ち上がった時も
断ったという話で、
今回裁判を起こすことによって
またメディアに注目されることになったとしても
なんとしてもこの「６０年後」の出版を差し止めかったという
強い想いがひしひしと伝わってくるニュースでした。
私自身、「ライ麦畑でつかまえて」は
学生時代に野崎 孝訳の日本語版
を読みましたが
その当時は（ちょっと情けないですが
）
「言葉も古いし、何がいいのかさっぱり分からない」
くらいの感想しか持たなかったので
この機会に改めて原書で読んでみようと思い、手にとったら・・・
一気に読み終わりました！
面白かったです。
感想を書くのも野暮ったい気がしますが
鋭いキレのある文章がとにかく新鮮で、
また少年から大人へと成長する真っ只中で混乱している
思春期の少年の心の動きが鮮やかに描かれていて、
「Cather in the Rye」の題名も天才的で、
読み終わってからもしばらく感動が続きました。
主人公のモノローグで話が進むので
最初から最後まで卑俗表現だらけで
英語の観点からいうと簡単なリーディングではないと思いますが
興味のある方、また口語表現に自信のある方は
ぜひチャレンジしてみてください。
最近は村上春樹の訳本
も出ていますが、
この原書の魅力、サリンジャーの魅力は
絶対に訳すことはできないと確信します。
ちなみに、原書を読み終わってから気になって
裁判の結果を調べてみたら「サリンジャーの勝利
」でした。
最初は興味本位でパロディー版も読んでみたいな、なんて思っていましたが
"There's no more to Holden Caulfield. Read the book again. It's all there."
(ホールデン・コールフィールドについて書き足すことは何もない。本をもう一度読んでみなさい。全てはそこに書かれているから。)
というサリンジャーのコメントの通りだと思うので、
妥当な結果になって良かったと思います。

MOVING TO A NEW COMPANY - getting off on the right foot, socially.
Until recently, when someone joined a Japanese company, they joined for life, and in exchange for their dedication to improving the fortunes of the company, they were rewarded with job security and steady advancement. But times changed. In the early 1990’s the economic bubble burst and companies could no longer afford to guarantee lifetime employment. As a result, employees no longer felt obligated to stay with the same company for life. This change in business culture, coupled with the present day economic situation, means that the job market has become very fluid and more and more workers are leaving their jobs and joining new companies.
But moving to a new company can be pretty daunting. Getting to know new co-workers in your own language can be difficult enough. But getting to know them in English can be even harder. Not only are you communicating in a foreign language, but also a different culture. But if you follow these steps and use these helpful phrases, you should be able to break the ice and form a good working relationship with your fellow employees quickly and effectively.
1.Introducing yourself
-It’s nice to meet you. My name is…
-I don’t think we’ve met yet. I’m…
-Your name is… right? It’s good to finally meet you.
-This is my first week with the company. Any advice would be appreciated.
2.Ask about their job/history with company
-How long have you been with the company?
-What do you do for (company name)
-Which division do you work in?
-What are you responsible for?
3.Move the conversation away from work
At this point, you can ask them about any number of topics to get them talking about themselves and help establish a familiarity between you and your coworker. If you already know something about their interests, ask them more.
-I hear you like….. What’s that like?
-Joe told me you are a fan of…. I love that, too.
Here are four useful topics to discuss:
-Sports
-Hobbies
-Family
-Travel
Note: It is better not to discuss serious questions like religion or politics when first meeting someone.
Look at this sample conversation:
Ryuji: Excuse me, your name is Karen, right? It’s nice to meet you. I’m Ryuji.
Karen: Nice to meet you. Are you new to the department?
Ryuji: I’m new to the company, actually. I’ve only been here for a week.
Karen: Welcome to the company!
Ryuji: Thanks very much. Any advice you would be welcome. How long have you been with the company?
Karen: This is my 6th year.
Ryuji: Have you been in the marketing department since you started?
Karen: I started in the HR department, actually.
Ryuji: That’s interesting. You must know the company well. When you’re not working, what do you like to do?
Karen: I’m a big sports fan, actually. Basketball is my favorite.
Ryuji: Oh, I love basketball.
Karen: Great! Maybe we can catch a game together sometime.
Ryuji: That would be nice. Thanks, Karen.

President Ma discusses importance of China with strategist Ohmae
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan businesses should establish a stronger presence on mainland China, given it has become a force to be reckoned with, said renowned global strategist Kenichi Ohmae, yesterday. While meeting President Ma Ying-jeou yesterday, Ohmae said China has emerged as a major economy in the world, especially in the midst of the current global recession.
According to Ohmae, the time before 2008 was the first stage of China's economic development. The year 2009 marked the beginning of the second stage.
One indication of China's increasing power was the fact January car sales for the first time exceeded those of the United State, Ohmae said. “This is a revolutionary change,” he said.

Ma discusses China market with strategist
Taiwan president receives Ohmae, author of 'The End of the Nation State,' in Taipei
President Ma Ying-jeou told the renowned global strategist Kenichi Ohmae yesterday that they share a common view on the importance of the mainland China market and that this perspective is manifested in his administration's cross-strait policy.
In a meeting with the Japanese business consultant at the Presidential Office, Ma said that his administration has adopted a series of measures to improve Taiwan's relations with the Chinese mainland after an eight-year lag in participation in the booming economic activities across the strait.

It’s a public relations nightmare. You run a successful restaurant business with locations all over Japan and several in other Asian countries and then you have a crisis. In this case; food poisoning. Pepper Food Service Company closed all 187 of its Pepper Lunch locations today after an outbreak of O-157 strain of E-coli was discovered. There were 11 people in different parts of Japan that fell ill as a result.
As with any such incident the management Pepper Food Service Company has reacted quickly. They have apologized and have closed their locations. Experience has shown that failure to acknowledge the issue and react accordingly leads to only bigger challenges in the future. The issues of Fujiya come to mind, where the problem was known but was not addressed and became a much bigger issue.
So what is the management team doing now? According to the news they are aggressively investigating the outbreak. They are looking for the source. The fact that it happened at several locations throughout Japan suggests that it was somewhere in the supply chain but they are not taking any chances. They are cleaning all their stores from top to bottom to ensure that they are spotless. I am sure that they are also speaking to all of their suppliers and looking at their productions facilities as possible sources as well.
Outwardly they are doing the right things, and saying the things they need to in order to reassure their customer base that they will reopen better than before. In all likelihood they are also working feverishly on public relations campaigns so that they can keep the public well-informed. Without a doubt the marketing team is also working on a plan to win back a skeptical market.
I for one hope they are able to bounce back better than ever because I love my Pepper Lunch.
